The particle (gagaがガ) identifies the grammatical subject of a sentence. The subject is the person or thing that performs an action or is in a certain state. While this sounds straightforward, the use of (gagaがガ) is nuanced, especially when compared to the topic marker (wawaはハ).
01
The Subject vs. The Topic (が (ga) vs. は (wa))
The most fundamental distinction is that (gagaがガ) introduces new information, while (wawaはハ) talks about something already known to the listener.
Use (gagaがガ) to introduce a new subject into the conversation. It answers an implicit "who?" or "what?".
あ、猫がいますね。
a, neko ga imasu ne.a, neko ga imasu ne.あ, ねこ が います ね.ア, ネコ ガ イマス ネ.
Oh, there's a cat.
電話が鳴っています。
denwa ga natte imasu.denwa ga natte imasu.でんわ が なって います.デンワ ガ ナッテ イマス.
The phone is ringing.
→ In both cases, the "cat" and the "phone" are new pieces of information for the listener.
Use は (wa) to make a comment about an established topic.
この猫はかわいいです。
kono neko wa kawaii desu.kono neko wa kawaii desu.この ねこ は かわいい です.コノ ネコ ハ カワイイ デス.
This cat is cute.
→ The cat is now the established topic, and we are commenting on it.
Think of it this way: (gagaがガ) puts a spotlight on the subject, while (wawaはハ) sets the stage for the rest of the sentence.
02
Emphasis and Identification
(gagaがガ) is used to emphasize or specify the subject, often implying "this one and not another." It singles out the doer of the action.
私がやります。
watashi ga yarimasu.watasi ga yarimasu.わたし が やります.ワタシ ガ ヤリマス.
I will do it (not someone else).
このデザインが一番好きです。
kono dezain ga ichiban suki desu.kono dezain ga itiban suki desu.この でざいん が いちばん すき です.コノ デザイン ガ イチバン スキ デス.
This design is the one I like the most.
彼が犯人だ。
kare ga hannin da.kare ga hannin da.かれ が はんにん だ.カレ ガ ハンニン ダ.
He is the culprit.
03
With Question Words
When a question word like (daredareだれダレ), (naninaniなにナニ), (doredoreどれドレ), or (dokodokoどこドコ) is the subject of a question, it must be followed by (gagaがガ).
誰が来ますか。
dare ga kimasu ka.dare ga kimasu ka.だれ が きます か.ダレ ガ キマス カ.
Who is coming?
何が面白いですか。
nani ga omoshiroi desu ka.nani ga omosiroi desu ka.なに が おもしろい です か.ナニ ガ オモシロイ デス カ.
What is interesting?
The answer to such a question will also naturally use (gagaがガ) to identify the subject.
田中さんが来ます。
Tanaka-san ga kimasu.Tanaka-san ga kimasu.たなか-さん が きます.タナカ-サン ガ キマス.
Tanaka is coming.
この本が面白いです。
kono hon ga omoshiroi desu.kono hon ga omosiroi desu.この ほん が おもしろい です.コノ ホン ガ オモシロイ デス.
This book is interesting.
04
Marking the "Object" of Feelings and Abilities
A specific and very common use of (gagaがガ) is to mark what would be the object in English for sentences describing likes, dislikes, abilities, potential, or desires. In these constructions, the thing being liked, understood, or wanted is treated as the subject of that state.
This applies to adjectives like:
- (sukisukiすきスキ) - likeable
- (kiraikiraiきらいキライ) - dislikeable
- (jōzujôzuじょうずジョウズ) - good at
- (hetahetaへたヘタ) - bad at
- (hoshiihosiiほしいホシイ) - wanted
And verbs like:
- (wakaruwakaruわかるワカル) - to be understandable
- (dekirudekiruできるデキル) - to be possible; can do
- (iruiruいるイル) - to be needed
私は犬が好きです。
watashi wa inu ga suki desu.watasi wa inu ga suki desu.わたし は いぬ が すき です.ワタシ ハ イヌ ガ スキ デス.
I like dogs. (Literally: As for me, dogs are likeable.)
彼は日本語がわかります。

watashi wa oyogu no ga heta desu.watasi wa oyogu no ga heta desu.わたし は およぐ の が へた です.ワタシ ハ オヨグ ノ ガ ヘタ デス.
I am bad at swimming.
05
In Subordinate Clauses
(gagaがガ) is used to mark the subject of a smaller clause that is part of a larger sentence. This is common when describing attributes of a topic already marked by (wawaはハ).
象は鼻が長いです。
zō wa hana ga nagai desu.zô wa hana ga nagai desu.ぞう は はな が ながい です.ゾウ ハ ハナ ガ ナガイ デス.
As for elephants, their noses are long.
→ (zōzôぞうゾウ) is the main topic. (hanahanaはなハナ) is the subject of the clause " (hana ga nagaihana ga nagaiはな が ながいハナ ガ ナガイ)" (the nose is long).
It is also used in relative clauses (clauses that modify a noun).
母が作ったクッキーは美味しいです。
haha ga tsukutta kukkī wa oishii desu.haha ga tsukutta kukkî wa oisii desu.はは が つくった くっきい は おいしい です.ハハ ガ ツクッタ クッキー ハ オイシイ デス.
The cookies that my mother made are delicious.
→ (hahahahaははハハ) is the subject of the action "made" within the modifying clause.
