The particle (kakaかカ) is primarily used to form questions. It is placed at the end of a sentence and can create several different types of questions depending on the context.
01
Forming Yes/No Questions
The most fundamental use of (kakaかカ) is to turn a declarative statement into a yes/no question. Unlike in English, where word order often changes (e.g., "It is a pen" vs. "Is it a pen?"), in Japanese you simply add (kakaかカ) to the end of the statement.
これは本です。
kore wa hon desu.kore wa hon desu.これ は ほん です.コレ ハ ホン デス.
This is a book.
これは本ですか。
kore wa hon desu ka.kore wa hon desu ka.これ は ほん です か.コレ ハ ホン デス カ.
Is this a book?
This structure works for any type of sentence, whether it ends with a noun, a verb, or an adjective.
鈴木さんは東京に住んでいます。
suzuki-san wa tōkyō ni sundeimasu.suzuki-san wa tôkyô ni sundeimasu.すずき-さん は とうきょう に すんでいます.スズキ-サン ハ トウキョウ ニ スンデイマス.

Was that movie interesting?
02
Politeness and Casual Questions
In polite speech (using (desudesuですデス)/ (masumasuますマス) forms), (kakaかカ) is the standard way to form a question. In casual, informal speech, (kakaかカ) is usually omitted. Instead, a question is indicated by using a rising intonation at the end of the sentence.
Polite
仕事は忙しいですか。
shigoto wa isogashii desu ka.sigoto wa isogasii desu ka.しごと は いそがしい です か.シゴト ハ イソガシイ デス カ.
Are you busy with work?
Casual

Busy with work?
In casual conversation, the particle (nonoのノ) can also be used at the end of a sentence to ask a question. It often implies a softer tone or that the speaker is seeking an explanation.
Polite
もう昼ご飯を食べましたか。
mō hirugohan o tabemashita ka.mô hirugohan o tabemasita ka.もう ひるごはん を たべました か.モウ ヒルゴハン ヲ タベマシタ カ.
Have you eaten lunch already?
Casual (with の)

mō hirugohan tabeta no?mô hirugohan tabeta no?もう ひるごはん たべた の?モウ ヒルゴハン タベタ ノ?
Eaten lunch already?
03
Asking "A or B" Questions
To offer a choice between two or more items in a question, (kakaかカ) is placed between each option. The sentence must still end with a final (kakaかカ) to function as a question. The structure is: Option A (kakaかカ) Option B (kakaかカ) ... ?
飲み物はコーヒーか紅茶がいいですか。
nomimono wa kōhī ka kōcha ga ii desu ka.nomimono wa kôhî ka kôtya ga ii desu ka.のみもの は こおひい か こうちゃ が いい です か.ノミモノ ハ コーヒー カ コウチャ ガ イイ デス カ.
For a drink, would you prefer coffee or tea?
明日か明後日、時間がありますか。

Do you have time tomorrow or the day after tomorrow?
When answering this type of question, you do not use (haihaiはいハイ) (yes) or (iieiieいいえイイエ) (no). Instead, you respond by stating your choice.
04
Using か for "or" in Statements
The same `A (kakaかカ) B` structure can be used in a non-question sentence to mean "A or B". In this case, there is no final (kakaかカ) at the end of the sentence.
ペンか鉛筆を貸してください。
pen ka enpitsu o kashite kudasai.pen ka enpitsu o kasite kudasai.ぺん か えんぴつ を かして ください.ペン カ エンピツ ヲ カシテ クダサイ.

Next week, I will go to Osaka or Kyoto.
05
Embedding Questions in Sentences
(kakaかカ) can also be used to embed a question within a larger sentence, similar to "if" or "whether" in English. The clause ending in (kakaかカ) functions as a noun phrase.
山田さんがパーティーに来るか知りません。
yamada-san ga pātī ni kuru ka shirimasen.yamada-san ga pâtî ni kuru ka sirimasen.やまだ-さん が ぱあてぃい に くる か しりません.ヤマダ-サン ガ パーティー ニ クル カ シリマセン.

sore ga tadashii ka kakunin shimasu.sore ga tadasii ka kakunin simasu.それ が ただしい か かくにん します.ソレ ガ タダシイ カ カクニン シマス.
I will confirm whether that is correct.
A common construction is (ーka dō kaーka dô kaーか どう かーカ ドウ カ), which translates to "whether or not" and makes the meaning more explicit.
