When counting things, a classifier (also called a counter) must be attached to the number. This is a suffix that categorizes the noun being counted. While English sometimes uses classifiers (e.g., "two sheets of paper," "a pair of scissors"), they are mandatory in Japanese for almost all counting.
The basic structure is: Noun + Number + Classifier.

02
Sound Changes
The first sound of some classifiers changes depending on the number that precedes it. This is a natural phonetic shift to make pronunciation easier. This most commonly affects classifiers beginning with an "h" sound.
The general pattern is:
- After 1, 6, 8, 10: h → p
- After 3: h → b
本 (hon → pon / bon)
- (ipponipponいっぽんイッポン) - one long object
- (sanbonsanbonさんぼんサンボン) - three long objects
- (ropponropponろっぽんロッポン) - six long objects
- (happonhapponはっぽんハッポン) - eight long objects
- (jupponjupponじゅっぽんジュッポン) - ten long objects
匹 (hiki → piki / biki)
- (ippikiippikiいっぴきイッピキ) - one small animal
- (sanbikisanbikiさんびきサンビキ) - three small animals
- (roppikiroppikiろっぴきロッピキ) - six small animals
- (happikihappikiはっぴきハッピキ) - eight small animals
- (juppikijuppikiじゅっぴきジュッピキ) - ten small animals
杯 (hai → pai / bai)
- (ippaiippaiいっぱいイッパイ) - one cup/bowl
- (sanbaisanbaiさんばいサンバイ) - three cups/bowls
- (roppairoppaiろっぱいロッパイ) - six cups/bowls
- (happaihappaiはっぱいハッパイ) - eight cups/bowls
- (juppaijuppaiじゅっぱいジュッパイ) - ten cups/bowls
03
Irregular and Special Readings
Some number and classifier combinations have unique, irregular readings that must be memorized.
Counting People
The words for one and two people are completely irregular. From three onwards, the regular (ninninにんニン) pattern is used.
- (hitorihitoriひとりヒトリ) - one person
- (futarifutariふたりフタリ) - two people
- (sanninsanninさんにんサンニン) - three people
- (yoninyoninよにんヨニン) - four people
Number Pronunciations
Certain numbers have preferred readings when used with classifiers to avoid confusion or unlucky-sounding words.
- (yon/shiyon/siよん/しヨン/シ) is usually read (yonyonよんヨン) instead of (shisiしシ), as (shisiしシ) sounds like (shi, death).
- (nana/shichinana/sitiなな/しちナナ/シチ) is often read (nanananaななナナ) instead of (shichisitiしちシチ) to avoid confusion with (ichiitiいちイチ).
- (kyū/kukyû/kuきゅう/くキュウ/ク) is usually read (kyūkyûきゅうキュウ) instead of (kukuくク), as (kukuくク) sounds like (ku, suffering).
04
The General Counter: 〜つ (ーtsu)
When you don't know the specific classifier for an object, or in many casual situations, you can use a set of native Japanese numbers. This system, often called the (tsutsuつツ) counter, works for counting up to ten general items. It is very common when ordering food and drinks.
- (hitotsuhitotsuひとつヒトツ) - one thing
- (futatsufutatsuふたつフタツ) - two things
- (mittsumittsuみっつミッツ) - three things
- (yottsuyottsuよっつヨッツ) - four things
- (itsutsuitsutsuいつつイツツ) - five things
- (muttsumuttsuむっつムッツ) - six things
- (nanatsunanatsuななつナナツ) - seven things
- (yattsuyattsuやっつヤッツ) - eight things
- (kokonotsukokonotsuここのつココノツ) - nine things
- (tōtôとおトオ) - ten things
りんごを三つください。
ringo o mittsu kudasai.ringo o mittsu kudasai.りんご を みっつ ください.リンゴ ヲ ミッツ クダサイ.
Three apples, please.
テーブルが二つあります。
tēburu ga futatsu arimasu.têburu ga futatsu arimasu.てえぶる が ふたつ あります.テーブル ガ フタツ アリマス.
There are two tables.
This system cannot be used for people, animals, time, or money. For those, you must use the specific classifier.
05
Asking "How Many?"
To ask about quantity, you combine the question word (nan, what/how many) with the appropriate classifier. For the general (tsutsuつツ) counter, the question word is (ikutsuikutsuいくつイクツ).
学生は何人いますか。
gakusei wa nannin imasu ka.gakusei wa nannin imasu ka.がくせい は なんにん います か.ガクセイ ハ ナンニン イマス カ.
How many students are there?
ペンを何本買いましたか。
pen o nanbon kaimashita ka.pen o nanbon kaimasita ka.ぺん を なんぼん かいました か.ペン ヲ ナンボン カイマシタ カ.
