Expressing 'And' with と

The particle (totoとト) is a versatile particle primarily used to connect nouns, but it also has important functions in quoting speech and forming conditional sentences.

01

Connecting Nouns in a Complete List

Quoting Speech and Thoughts

Another key function of (totoとト) is to mark a direct or indirect quotation. It follows the quoted words or thought and is typically paired with verbs like (iu - to say), (omó - to think), or (kiku - to ask).

For direct quotes, the spoken words are often enclosed in Japanese quotation marks 「 」.
