Japanese demonstratives are built on a consistent system based on the speaker's and listener's relative positions. This system is often called the (ko-so-a-doko-so-a-doこ-そ-あ-どコ-ソ-ア-ド) pattern.
The first syllable of each demonstrative word indicates proximity:
- (ko-ko-こ-コ-): Indicates something near the speaker.
- (so-so-そ-ソ-): Indicates something near the listener.
- (a-a-あ-ア-): Indicates something distant from both the speaker and the listener.
- (do-do-ど-ド-): Used to ask a question (which? where? how?).
This pattern applies to things, places, directions, and more, by changing the ending of the word.

Referring to Things: これ (kore), それ (sore), あれ (are), どれ (dore)
These words are pronouns, meaning they stand alone and replace a noun. They are used to point out specific objects.
- (korekoreこれコレ): this thing (near the speaker)
- (soresoreそれソレ): that thing (near the listener)
- (areareあれアレ): that thing over there (far from both)
- (doredoreどれドレ): which thing?
