The potential form of a verb expresses that someone has the ability to do something, or that something is possible. It is the equivalent of "can" or "be able to" in English. Once a verb is in its potential form, it conjugates like a regular Group 1 (- (ruruるル)) verb.
01
Conjugating Verbs into the Potential Form
The conjugation rule depends on the verb's group.
1. Group 1 (Ichidan Verbs)
Drop the final (ruruるル) and add (rarerurareruられるラレル).
- (mirumiruみるミル) → (mirarerumirareruみられるミラレル) - can see
- (taberutaberuたべるタベル) → (taberarerutaberareruたべられるタベラレル) - can eat
- (okiruokiruおきるオキル) → (okirareruokirareruおきられるオキラレル) - can get up
In casual conversation, the (raraらラ) is often dropped, creating a shorter form.
- (mirarerumirareruみられるミラレル) → (mirerumireruみれるミレル)
- (taberarerutaberareruたべられるタベラレル) → (tabererutabereruたべれるタベレル)
2. Group 2 (Godan Verbs)
Change the final -u vowel sound to the -e vowel sound and add (ruruるル).
- (kakukakuかくカク) → (kakerukakeruかけるカケル) - can write
- (hanasuhanasuはなすハナス) → (hanaseruhanaseruはなせるハナセル) - can speak
- (matsumatsuまつマツ) → (materumateruまてるマテル) - can wait
- (nomunomuのむノム) → (nomerunomeruのめるノメル) - can drink
- (tsukurutsukuruつくるツクル) → (tsukurerutsukureruつくれるツクレル) - can make
3. Group 3 (Irregular Verbs)
These two verbs have unique potential forms that must be memorized.
- (surusuruするスル) → (dekirudekiruできるデキル) - can do
- (kurukuruくるクル) → (korarerukorareruこられるコラレル) - can come
The verb (kurukuruくるクル) is also often shortened to (korerukoreruこれるコレル) in casual speech.
02
Using Particles with the Potential Form (が vs. を)
When using the potential form, the direct object of the verb, which is normally marked with the particle (ooをヲ), is usually marked with (gagaがガ) instead. This shifts the focus to the object that can be acted upon.
私は寿司を食べます。
watashi wa sushi o tabemasu.watasi wa susi o tabemasu.わたし は すし を たべます.ワタシ ハ スシ ヲ タベマス.

kare wa nihongo ga hanasemasu.kare wa nihongo ga hanasemasu.かれ は にほんご が はなせます.カレ ハ ニホンゴ ガ ハナセマス.

While (gagaがガ) is grammatically standard, it is common to hear (ooをヲ) used in conversation. Using (ooをヲ) can place a slightly stronger emphasis on the action itself.
重い荷物を一人で持てますか。

03
The Special Case of できる
The verb (dekirudekiruできるデキル) is the potential form of (surusuruするスル), but it also functions as a standalone verb to express ability. It is frequently used with nouns for skills and activities. The structure is Noun + (gagaがガ) + (dekirudekiruできるデキル).
姉は料理ができます。
ane wa ryōri ga dekimasu.ane wa ryôri ga dekimasu.あね は りょうり が できます.アネ ハ リョウリ ガ デキマス.
