Verbs: Informal Speech Level

Informal speech, also known as the "plain form" or "dictionary form," is the style used in casual situations with people you know well, such as friends, family, and peers. It contrasts with the polite (masumasuますマス) form, which is used with strangers, superiors, and in formal settings. The core of informal speech is conjugating verbs into their plain forms rather than their polite (masumasuますマス) forms.

01

Identifying Verb Groups

To conjugate verbs correctly, you must first identify which of the three groups a verb belongs to.

Group 1 (Godan Verbs / う-verbs): These verbs end with a -u sound. Their dictionary form ends in one of the following: (uuうウ), (kukuくク), (guguぐグ), (susuすス), (tsutsuつツ), (nunuぬヌ), (bubuぶブ), (mumuむム), or (ruruるル).

A key point is that Group 1 verbs ending in (ruruるル) do not have an i or e sound before it.

  • (auauあうアウ) - to meet
  • (kakukakuかくカク) - to write
  • (nomunomuのむノム) - to drink

Group 2 (Ichidan Verbs / る-verbs): These verbs are simpler. Their dictionary form always ends in (ruruるル), and the sound immediately before the (ruruるル) is always an i or e sound.

  • (mirumiruみるミル) - to see (i-sound before (ruruるル))
  • (taberutaberuたべるタベル) - to eat (e-sound before (ruruるル))
  • (okiruokiruおきるオキル) - to wake up (i-sound before (ruruるル))

Important Exceptions: Some verbs look like Group 2 but are actually Group 1. These must be memorized.

  • (kaerukaeruかえるカエル) - to return
  • (hashiruhasiruはしるハシル) - to run
  • (hairuhairuはいるハイル) - to enter

Group 3 (Irregular Verbs): There are only two verbs in this group.

  • (surusuruするスル) - to do
  • (kurukuruくるクル) - to come

02

Basic Informal Conjugations

There are four fundamental informal forms: present affirmative, present negative, past affirmative, and past negative.

Present Affirmative (Dictionary Form)

This is the base form of the verb. It is used for present habits and future actions in informal speech.

  • 毎日、日本語を勉強する。

    mainichi, nihongo o benkyō suru.mainiti, nihongo o benkyô suru.まいにち, にほんご を べんきょう する.マイニチ, ニホンゴ ヲ ベンキョウ スル.

    I study Japanese every day.

    ashita, eiga o miru.asita, eiga o miru.あした, えいが を みる.アシタ, エイガ ヲ ミル.

    I'll watch a movie tomorrow.

Present Negative (The ない Form)

This form expresses "do not" or "will not."

Group 1: Change the final -u vowel sound to its corresponding -a sound and add (nainaiないナイ).

  • (kakukakuかくカク) → (kakakakaかかカカ) + (nainaiないナイ) → (kakanaikakanaiかかないカカナイ)
  • (nomunomuのむノム) → (nomanomaのまノマ) + (nainaiないナイ) → (nomanainomanaiのまないノマナイ)

Exception: For verbs ending in (uuうウ), change (uuうウ) to (wawaはハ) before adding (nainaiないナイ).

  • (auauあうアウ) → (awanaiawanaiあわないアワナイ)

Group 2: Drop the final (ruruるル) and add (nainaiないナイ).

Group 3: These are irregular.

    kare wa pātī ni konai.kare wa pâtî ni konai.かれ は ぱあてぃい に こない.カレ ハ パーティー ニ コナイ.

He isn't coming to the party.

Past Affirmative (The た Form)

This form is the informal equivalent of (mashitamasitaましたマシタ). The conjugation for Group 1 is complex and depends on the verb's ending.

Group 1

  • Verbs ending in (uuうウ), (tsutsuつツ), (ruruるル) → change to (ttattaったッタ). Ex: (auauあうアウ) → (attaattaあったアッタ).

  • Verbs ending in (kukuくク) → change to (itaitaいたイタ). Ex: (kakukakuかくカク) → (kaitakaitaかいたカイタ).
  • Verbs ending in (guguぐグ) → change to (idaidaいだイダ). Ex: (oyoguoyoguおよぐオヨグ) → (oyoidaoyoidaおよいだオヨイダ).
  • Verbs ending in (susuすス) → change to (shitasitaしたシタ). Ex: (hanasuhanasuはなすハナス) → (hanashitahanasitaはなしたハナシタ).

Exception: (ikuikuいくイク) becomes (ittaittaいったイッタ), not (iitaiitaいいたイイタ).

Group 2: Drop the final (ruruるル) and add (tataたタ).

  • (mirumiruみるミル) → (mitamitaみたミタ)

Group 3: These are irregular.

Past Negative (The なかった Form)

This form is created consistently across all groups. Take the present negative ( (nainaiないナイ)) form and change the final (iiいイ) to (kattakattaかったカッタ).

  • (kakanaikakanaiかかないカカナイ) → (kakanakattakakanakattaかかなかったカカナカッタ)
  • (tabenaitabenaiたべないタベナイ) → (tabenakattatabenakattaたべなかったタベナカッタ)

03

The Informal Copula: だ (da)

In informal speech, the polite copula (desudesuですデス) is replaced by (dadaだダ) when a sentence ends with a noun or a (nanaなナ)-adjective. The past tense is (dattadattaだったダッタ).

  • 彼は医者だ。

    kare wa isha da.kare wa isya da.かれ は いしゃ だ.カレ ハ イシャ ダ.

Note that (iiいイ)-adjectives do not take (dadaだダ). They can end a sentence on their own.

Informal Obligation ("Have to...")

The formal (nakereba narimasennakereba narimasenなければ なりませんナケレバ ナリマセン) is often shortened in casual speech. This is formed by taking the (nainaiないナイ) form of a verb, dropping the final (iiいイ), and adding (kyakyaきゃキャ) or (kuchakutyaくちゃクチャ).

  • (ikuikuいくイク) → (ikanaiikanaiいかないイカナイ) → (ikanakyaikanakyaいかなきゃイカナキャ)

The (te irute iruて いるテ イル) form, used for ongoing actions, is commonly contracted by dropping the (iiいイ).
