Verbs: Polite Speech Level

Polite speech, known as (teineigoteineigoていねいごテイネイゴ), is the standard form for communication in most public and professional situations. It is characterized by the use of (desudesuですデス) after nouns and adjectives, and the (masumasuますマス) form for verbs. This style conveys respect and is the default when speaking to strangers, colleagues, superiors, customers, or anyone with whom you are not on close, informal terms.

01

Using です (desu) for Nouns and Adjectives

Forming the Polite Verb Stem

All polite verb forms are built from a base called the "masu-stem." How you form this stem depends on the verb group.

Group 1 (Godan Verbs): These verbs end in a syllable with a -u vowel in their dictionary form. To form the stem, change this final -u vowel to an -i vowel.

  • (kakukakuかくカク) → (kakikakiかきカキ)
  • (nomunomuのむノム) → (nominomiのみノミ)
  • (auauあうアウ) → (aiaiあいアイ)

Group 2 (Ichidan Verbs): These verbs end in (ruruるル), typically preceded by an "i" or "e" sound (e.g., (iruiruいるイル), (erueruえるエル)). To form the stem, simply drop the final (ruruるル).

  • (taberutaberuたべるタベル) → (tabetabeたべタベ)
  • (mirumiruみるミル) → (mimiみミ)
  • (neruneruねるネル) → (neneねネ)

Group 3 (Irregular Verbs): There are only two common irregular verbs.

  • (surusuruするスル) → (shisiしシ)
  • (kurukuruくるクル) → (kikiきキ)
