Doing Something For Someone with あげる

The auxiliary verb (ageruageruあげるアゲル) attaches to the (teteてテ)-form of another verb to express that someone performs an action for the benefit of someone else. It frames the action as a favor or an act of kindness, essentially meaning "to do (something) for (someone)."

01

Basic Structure

The structure is formed by taking the (teteてテ)-form of the main verb and adding (ageruageruあげるアゲル) (or its polite form, (agemasuagemasuあげますアゲマス)).

Verb て (te)-form + あげる (ageru)

The person performing the action (the "giver") is the subject, marked with (wawaはハ) or (gagaがガ). The person receiving the benefit of the action (the "receiver") is marked with the particle (niniにニ).

  • 私が弟に本を読んであげた。

watashi ga otōto ni hon o yonde ageta.watasi ga otôto ni hon o yonde ageta.わたし が おとうと に ほん を よんで あげた.ワタシ ガ オトウト ニ ホン ヲ ヨンデ アゲタ.

I read a book for my younger brother.

  • 田中さんが鈴木さんにお弁当を作ってあげました。

    tanaka-san ga suzuki-san ni o-bentō o tsukutte agemashita.tanaka-san ga suzuki-san ni o-bentô o tsukutte agemasita.たなか-さん が すずき-さん に お-べんとう を つくって あげました.タナカ-サン ガ スズキ-サン ニ オ-ベントウ ヲ ツクッテ アゲマシタ.

Mr. Tanaka made a bento box for Ms. Suzuki.

Perspective: From "In-Group" to "Out-Group"

The use of 〜 (te agerute ageruて あげるテ アゲル) is governed by social perspective. It is used when the giver of the action is the speaker or someone in the speaker's "in-group" ( (uchiutiうちウチ)), and the receiver is someone in an "out-group" ( (sotosotoそとソト)).

An "in-group" typically includes yourself and your family members. An "out-group" is everyone else.

Speaker does something for someone else

  • 私は友達に道を教えてあげました。

watashi wa tomodachi ni michi o oshiete agemashita.watasi wa tomodati ni miti o osiete agemasita.わたし は ともだち に みち を おしえて あげました.ワタシ ハ トモダチ ニ ミチ ヲ オシエテ アゲマシタ.

I taught my friend the way.

In-group member does something for an out-group member

  • 母が私の友達にクッキーを焼いてあげた。

haha ga watashi no tomodachi ni kukkī o yaite ageta.haha ga watasi no tomodati ni kukkî o yaite ageta.はは が わたし の ともだち に くっきい を やいて あげた.ハハ ガ ワタシ ノ トモダチ ニ クッキー ヲ ヤイテ アゲタ.

My mother baked cookies for my friend.

03

A Note on Politeness and Social Status

Because 〜 (te agerute ageruて あげるテ アゲル) implies doing a favor, it can sound condescending if used incorrectly. It is generally safe to use when the receiver is of a lower or equal social status, such as a younger sibling, a child, a pet, or a close friend.

Using 〜 (te agerute ageruて あげるテ アゲル) when speaking to or about a superior (like a boss or a teacher) is considered rude, as it implies you are looking down on them. In these situations, the honorific verb (sashiagerusasiageruさしあげるサシアゲル) is used instead.

For a superior

  • 私は先生の荷物を持ってさしあげました。

watashi wa sensei no nimotsu o motte sashiagemashita.watasi wa sensei no nimotsu o motte sasiagemasita.わたし は せんせい の にもつ を もって さしあげました.ワタシ ハ センセイ ノ ニモツ ヲ モッテ サシアゲマシタ.

I carried the teacher's luggage for them.
