Receiving Something with もらう

The verb (moraumorauもらうモラウ) means "to receive." It is used from the perspective of the person who receives an item or a favor. In a sentence using (moraumorauもらうモラウ), the receiver is always the subject.

01

Receiving Objects

When used for physical objects, the giver is marked with the particle (niniにニ) or (karakaraからカラ). The receiver is the subject, and the object is marked with (ooをヲ).

The basic structure is:

[Receiver] は/が [Giver] に/から [Object] を もらう。

While both (niniにニ) and (karakaraからカラ) mean "from," (niniにニ) is typically used when receiving from a person. (karakaraからカラ) can also be used for a person, but it is required when receiving from an entity like a company or a school.

    watashi wa tanaka-san ni hon o moraimashita.watasi wa tanaka-san ni hon o moraimasita.わたし は たなか-さん に ほん を もらいました.ワタシ ハ タナカ-サン ニ ホン ヲ モライマシタ.

Receiving Actions or Favors (〜て もらう (ーte morau))

To express that you received an action or favor from someone, you use the te-form of a verb followed by (moraumorauもらうモラウ). This construction is very common and translates to phrases like "I had someone do..." or "I got someone to do..."

The structure is:

[Receiver] は/が [Giver] に [Verb in te-form] もらう。

This pattern emphasizes that the receiver benefited from the action performed by the giver.

Perspective: もらう (morau) vs. くれる (kureru)

Both (moraumorauもらうモラウ) and (kurerukureruくれるクレル) are used for receiving, but they frame the event from different perspectives by changing the subject of the sentence.

もらう (morau) (Receiver's Perspective)

The subject is the person who receives the action. This can imply that the receiver requested or initiated the favor.

  • 私は鈴木さんに空港まで送ってもらいました。

watashi wa suzuki-san ni kūkō made okutte moraimashita.watasi wa suzuki-san ni kûkô made okutte moraimasita.わたし は すずき-さん に くうこう まで おくって もらいました.ワタシ ハ スズキ-サン ニ クウコウ マデ オクッテ モライマシタ.

I had Mr. Suzuki drive me to the airport.

(Focus is on "I" receiving the favor.)

くれる (kureru) (Giver's Perspective)

The subject is the person who gives the action or favor to the speaker (or their in-group). This often describes a spontaneous act of kindness.

  • 鈴木さんが私を空港まで送ってくれました。

suzuki-san ga watashi o kūkō made okutte kuremashita.suzuki-san ga watasi o kûkô made okutte kuremasita.すずき-さん が わたし を くうこう まで おくって くれました.スズキ-サン ガ ワタシ ヲ クウコウ マデ オクッテ クレマシタ.

Humble Form: いただく (itadaku)

When you receive something from a person of higher social status (such as a boss, a teacher, or a respected elder), you should use the humble verb (itadakuitadakuいただくイタダク) instead of (moraumorauもらうモラウ). This applies to both objects and actions.
