Negation

To make a statement negative, the ending of a verb, adjective, or noun is changed. The specific ending used depends on the word type and the level of politeness (informal or polite).

01

Negating Verbs

Verb negation changes based on the verb group, tense, and politeness level. The two main negative forms are the informal (nainaiないナイ)-form and the polite (masenmasenませんマセン)-form.

Informal Negative (Non-Past)

This is also called the plain negative form or (nainaiないナイ)-form. It's used in casual conversation with friends and family.

For ichidan verbs (or (ruruるル)-verbs), replace the final (ruruるル) with (nainaiないナイ).

    eiga o miru. → eiga o minai.eiga o miru. → eiga o minai.えいが を みる. → えいが を みない.エイガ ヲ ミル. → エイガ ヲ ミナイ.

For godan verbs (or (uuうウ)-verbs), change the final vowel sound from 'u' to 'a' and add (nainaiないナイ).

A special case for godan verbs are those ending with the hiragana (uuうウ). This (uuうウ) changes to (wawaはハ) before (nainaiないナイ).

Polite Negative (Non-Past)

This form, ending in (masenmasenませんマセン), is used in formal situations or when speaking to superiors or strangers. To form it, simply replace the polite affirmative ending (masumasuますマス) with (masenmasenませんマセン).
