-tip-: Make Or Let Someone Do

-tip-, after a vowel -sip-, means "make someone do it" or "let someone do it". The one who does it becomes the object of the new verb: "eats" gives "makes him eat, feeds him".

  • Mobiiliga ilinnut atortereerpara. Utertiguk!

I already lent you my cell phone. Give it back! (ator- "use" + -te- "let": lit. I already let you use my phone)

  • Kamissatit qanutut qalipaateqartikkusuppigit?

What color shoes do you want? (lit. what color do you want them to have?)

Need: pisariaqartip-

Before some suffixes -tip- shortens to -te- or -ti-: "I already let (you) use it".

"is necessary" with -tip- gives "needs it", literally "makes it necessary".

  • Immuk literi ataaseq, iffiaq, mamalaarlu pisariaqartippakka.

I need a liter of milk, a loaf of bread, and a glass of jam.

  • Niuernialerpunga. Arlaannik pisariaqartitsivit?

I'm going shopping. Do you need anything? (-tsi-: "need something")
