Future Tense Marker 'sẽ'

Context and Time Words

Vietnamese grammar relies heavily on context rather than strict tense changes. If a sentence already contains a specific time word indicating the future, such as ngày mai tomorrow or tuần sau next week, the marker sẽ is often optional.

In casual Southern spoken Vietnamese, speakers frequently omit sẽ when the timing is clear. However, keeping sẽ in the sentence adds emphasis, certainty, or formality. It confirms that the event is definitely going to happen.

• Ngày mai tôi đi chợ.

  Tomorrow I go to the market. (Casual, time word is sufficient)

• Tuần sau ba sẽ đi Sài Gòn.

  Next week Dad will go to Saigon. (Emphasized certainty)

If there is no time word, you must use sẽ to distinguish the future action from the present tense.

• Chị ấy sẽ gọi cho em.

  She will call you. (Without 'sẽ', this could mean "She calls you")

Negative Future

To express that something "will not" happen, combine sẽ with the negative marker không. The structure is sẽ không followed by the verb.

• Trời sẽ không mưa đâu.

  It will not rain.

• Tôi sẽ không quên.

  I will not forget.

Immediate Future vs. General Future

While sẽ covers the general future, there is a distinction when an action is imminent. If something is "about to" happen very soon, speakers often use sắp instead of sẽ.

• sẽ: Used for general predictions, promises, or plans (Will).
• sắp: Used for actions happening momentarily (About to).

• Tôi sắp đi ngủ.

  I am about to go to sleep.

• Phim sắp hết rồi.

  The movie is about to end.
