Indefinite Article 'một'

means one as a number, but it also works as the Vietnamese equivalent of English a / an. It always appears with a classifier:

một + Classifier + Noun

  • Tôi có một con mèo.

    I have a cat.

  • Đây là một cuốn sách.

    This is a book.

  • Anh ấy mua một cái áo.

    He buys a shirt.

'Một' vs. No Article

Vietnamese nouns do not need an article the way English nouns do. A bare noun refers to the concept in general, while introduces a specific but unidentified item:

  • Tôi thích sách.

    I like books. (general)

  • Tôi đang đọc một cuốn sách.

I am reading a book. (specific)
