The words (dadaだダ) and (desudesuですデス) are the Japanese copula, which is the equivalent of the verb "to be" (is, am, are, was, were). They are used to state that one thing is another. The primary difference between them is the level of politeness: (dadaだダ) is used in informal or plain speech, while (desudesuですデス) is used in polite speech.
Both forms typically follow nouns and (nanaなナ)-adjectives to complete a sentence.

Present Negative
This form states what something "is not" or "are not". There are two polite forms, with (de wa arimasende wa arimasenで は ありませんデ ハ アリマセン) being more formal than (ja arimasenja arimasenじゃ ありませんジャ アリマセン).
- Informal: (ja naija naiじゃ ないジャ ナイ)
- Polite: (ja arimasenja arimasenじゃ ありませんジャ アリマセン)
- More Formal: (de wa arimasende wa arimasenで は ありませんデ ハ アリマセン)

- Polite: (ja arimasen deshitaja arimasen desitaじゃ ありません でしたジャ アリマセン デシタ)

02
Usage with Nouns and Adjectives
The copula is required to end sentences with nouns and (nanaなナ)-adjectives, but not (iiいイ)-adjectives.
Nouns and な (na)-Adjectives
Both nouns and (nanaなナ)-adjectives require (dadaだダ) or (desudesuですデス) (or one of their conjugated forms) to form a complete predicate.
猫は動物だ。
neko wa dōbutsu da.neko wa dôbutsu da.ねこ は どうぶつ だ.ネコ ハ ドウブツ ダ.
Cats are animals.
この街は静かです。
kono machi wa shizuka desu.kono mati wa sizuka desu.この まち は しずか です.コノ マチ ハ シズカ デス.

試験は簡単だった。
shiken wa kantan datta.siken wa kantan datta.しけん は かんたん だった.シケン ハ カンタン ダッタ.
The exam was easy.
い (i)-Adjectives
(iiいイ)-adjectives are different because they are "complete" predicates on their own. The meaning of "is" is already included in the adjective. Therefore, you never use (dadaだダ) after an (iiいイ)-adjective.
Incorrect: * (kono eiga wa omoshiroi dakono eiga wa omosiroi daこの えいが は おもしろい だコノ エイガ ハ オモシロイ ダ)
Correct: (kono eiga wa omoshiroikono eiga wa omosiroiこの えいが は おもしろいコノ エイガ ハ オモシロイ) - This movie is interesting.
To make a sentence with an (iiいイ)-adjective polite, you simply add (desudesuですデス) to the end. This (desudesuですデス) only adds politeness and does not have the grammatical function of the copula.
このスープは熱い。
kono sūpu wa atsui.kono sûpu wa atsui.この すうぷ は あつい.コノ スープ ハ アツイ.
This soup is hot.
このスープは熱いです。
kono sūpu wa atsui desu.kono sûpu wa atsui desu.この すうぷ は あつい です.コノ スープ ハ アツイ デス.
This soup is hot. (polite)
03
Forming Questions
Polite Questions
To form a polite question, add the particle (kakaかカ) after (desudesuですデス) or (deshitadesitaでしたデシタ).
あれは駅ですか。
are wa eki desu ka.are wa eki desu ka.あれ は えき です か.アレ ハ エキ デス カ.
Is that the station?
昨日のパーティーは楽しかったですか。
kinō no pātī wa tanoshikatta desu ka.kinô no pâtî wa tanosikatta desu ka.きのう の ぱあてぃい は たのしかった です か.キノウ ノ パーティー ハ タノシカッタ デス カ.
Was yesterday's party fun?
Informal Questions
In informal questions, the final (dadaだダ) is almost always dropped. The sentence is then spoken with a rising intonation to indicate it's a question.
明日、暇?
ashita, hima?asita, hima?あした, ひま?アシタ, ヒマ?
Are you free tomorrow?
あの人、誰?
ano hito, dare?ano hito, dare?あの ひと, だれ?アノ ヒト, ダレ?
Who is that person?
You can also add the particle (nonoのノ) at the end of an informal question, which can sound a bit softer or more inquisitive.
大丈夫なの?
daijōbu na no?daijôbu na no?だいじょうぶ な の?ダイジョウブ ナ ノ?
Are you okay?
