In polite speech, adjectives that end a sentence (acting as a predicate, like in "The book is interesting") must be conjugated. The form of the adjective indicates the tense (present or past), affirmation (positive or negative), and politeness level of the statement.
There are two main categories of adjectives: (iiいイ)-adjectives, which end with the hiragana character (iiいイ), and (nanaなナ)-adjectives, which are used with (nanaなナ) when they precede a noun.
01
Polite Forms of い-Adjectives
To make an (iiいイ)-adjective polite when it ends a sentence, you add (desudesuですデス) after its conjugated form. The adjective itself changes to show tense and negation.
Present Affirmative: Dictionary Form + です (desu)
The adjective's dictionary form is used, followed by (desudesuですデス).

Present Negative: -くない (kunai) + です (desu)
Drop the final (iiいイ) from the adjective and add (kunai desukunai desuくない ですクナイ デス).

02
Polite Forms of な-Adjectives
For (nanaなナ)-adjectives, the adjective itself does not change. Instead, the politeness, tense, and negation are all shown by changing the copula (desudesuですデス) that follows it.
Present Affirmative: Adjective + です (desu)
The adjective is followed directly by (desudesuですデス).

The adjective is followed by (de wa arimasende wa arimasenで は ありませんデ ハ アリマセン) for formal situations, or (ja arimasenja arimasenじゃ ありませんジャ アリマセン) in slightly less formal, but still polite, conversation.

03
Adjectives Before Nouns
When an adjective comes directly before a noun to describe it (e.g., "an interesting book"), it does not conjugate for politeness. The politeness of the sentence is determined by the final verb or copula.
(iiいイ)-adjectives are placed directly before the noun in their dictionary form.
