The auxiliary verb (mirumiruみるミル) attaches to the (teteてテ)-form of another verb to express the idea of "trying something" or "doing something to see what happens." While (mirumiruみるミル) literally means "to see," in this construction it adds a sense of experimentation, trial, or exploration to the main verb's action. It implies that the outcome is not yet known.
01
Formation
To form this construction, conjugate the main verb into its (teteてテ)-form and add (mirumiruみるミル).
- (hanasu → hanashite miruhanasu → hanasite miruはなす → はなして みるハナス → ハナシテ ミル) - to try speaking
- (taberu → tabete mirutaberu → tabete miruたべる → たべて みるタベル → タベテ ミル) - to try eating
- (kuru → kite mirukuru → kite miruくる → きて みるクル → キテ ミル) - to try coming
- (suru → shite mirusuru → site miruする → して みるスル → シテ ミル) - to try doing
02
Core Usage: Experimentation and Exploration
The primary function of (ーte miruーte miruーて みるーテ ミル) is to indicate that an action is being performed as a trial. You are doing something to find out what it is like, if it works, or if you like it. This makes it different from simply performing the action.
Compare:
- (sushi o tabemasu.susi o tabemasu.すし を たべます.スシ ヲ タベマス.) - I will eat sushi. (A simple statement of fact.)
- (sushi o tabete mimasu.susi o tabete mimasu.すし を たべて みます.スシ ヲ タベテ ミマス.) - I will try eating sushi. (Implies it's the first time, or you're trying it to see if you like it.)

Making Softer Suggestions and Requests
Using (ーte miruーte miruーて みるーテ ミル) is a common way to make suggestions and requests sound less like a command and more like a gentle invitation. The (ーte miteーte miteーて みてーテ ミテ) form is a casual request, while (ーte mite kudasaiーte mite kudasaiーて みて くださいーテ ミテ クダサイ) is more polite.
Direct command (strong)
- (kore o kite.kore o kite.これ を きて.コレ ヲ キテ.) - Wear this.
Softer suggestion with 〜てみる (ーte miru)
- (kore o kite mite.kore o kite mite.これ を きて みて.コレ ヲ キテ ミテ.) - Try wearing this.
