Quotation Particle と

The particle (totoとト) is used to mark a quotation. It indicates that the preceding word, phrase, or clause is what someone said, thought, felt, or decided. It can be used for both direct and indirect quotations.

01

Quoting Spoken Words

The most common use of (totoとト) is to report speech. It follows the exact or paraphrased words and is typically paired with a verb like (iuiuいうイウ) to say, (hanasuhanasuはなすハナス) to speak, or (kikukikuきくキク) to ask.

For direct quotations, the spoken words are enclosed in Japanese quotation marks, 「」 (kagi-kakkokagi-kakkoかぎ-かっこカギ-カッコ).

  • 田中さんは「会議は三時からです」と言いました。

Tanaka-san wa "kaigi wa sanji kara desu" to iimashita.Tanaka-san wa "kaigi wa sanji kara desu" to iimasita.たなか-さん は "かいぎ は さんじ から です" と いいました.タナカ-サン ハ "カイギ ハ サンジ カラ デス" ト イイマシタ.

For indirect quotations, the quotation marks are removed, and the quoted content is often in a plain form.
