Expressing 'seems like' with -そう

The suffix (sōsôそうソウ) is attached to adjectives and verbs to express an impression or a guess based on what one can see. It conveys that something "seems," "looks," or "appears" to be a certain way. It can also indicate that an action is about to happen.

01

With い-Adjectives

To use (sōsôそうソウ) with an (iiいイ)-adjective, remove the final (iiいイ) from the adjective and add (sōsôそうソウ).

  • このりんごは美味しそうです。

kono ringo wa oishisō desu.kono ringo wa oisisô desu.この りんご は おいしそう です.コノ リンゴ ハ オイシソウ デス.

03

With Verbs

To use (sōsôそうソウ) with a verb, attach it to the verb's (masumasuますマス)-stem (the form of the verb that comes before (masumasuますマス)). This usage often implies that an action is imminent or about to happen.

Negative Forms

The negative form indicates that something "does not seem" or "does not look" a certain way. The construction varies by word type.

For い (i)-adjectives

Change the adjective to its negative (ーkunaiーkunaiーくないークナイ) form, drop the final (iiいイ), and add (sasōsasôさそうサソウ).

  • この料理はあまり美味しくなさそうです。

kono ryōri wa amari oishikunasasō desu.kono ryôri wa amari oisikunasasô desu.この りょうり は あまり おいしくなさそう です.コノ リョウリ ハ アマリ オイシクナサソウ デス.

For Verbs

There are two common negative patterns.

1. To express that an action is "unlikely to happen," use the verb's (masumasuますマス)-stem + (sō ni naisô ni naiそう に ないソウ ニ ナイ).

  • この雨はすぐにはやみそうにない。

kono ame wa sugu ni wa yamisō ni nai.kono ame wa sugu ni wa yamisô ni nai.この あめ は すぐ に は やみそう に ない.コノ アメ ハ スグ ニ ハ ヤミソウ ニ ナイ.

2. To say it "doesn't look like" an action will happen, use the verb's negative (nainaiないナイ)-form, drop the final (iiいイ), and add (sasōsasôさそうサソウ). This is less common than the first pattern.

  • 彼はパーティーに来なさそうだ。

Comparing 'Seems Like' Expressions

そう (sō) vs. よう (yō)

(sōsôそうソウ) is based on direct visual evidence or immediate impression.

(yōyôようヨウ) is based on a more reasoned judgment or inference from various pieces of information, not just appearance.

(sōsôそうソウ) is based on what the speaker sees.

(rashiirasiiらしいラシイ) is based on hearsay or information the speaker has heard from others.
