Expressing 'also' with も

The particle (momoもモ) is an inclusive particle, most commonly translated as "also" or "too". It is used to indicate that something or someone shares a quality or is involved in the same action as a previously mentioned item.

01

Replacing は (wa), が (ga), and を (o)

The most fundamental use of (momoもモ) is to replace the topic marker (wawaはハ), the subject marker (gagaがガ), or the direct object marker (ooをヲ). When you want to say that a new noun is "also" the topic, subject, or object, you use (momoもモ) instead of the original particle.

When replacing (wawaはハ):

  • 私は日本人です。

    watashi wa nihonjin desu。watasi wa nihonjin desu。わたし は にほんじん です。ワタシ ハ ニホンジン デス。

    I am Japanese.

  • 鈴木さんも日本人です。

    suzuki-san mo nihonjin desu。suzuki-san mo nihonjin desu。すずき-さん も にほんじん です。スズキ-サン モ ニホンジン デス。

    Ms. Suzuki is also Japanese.

When replacing (gagaがガ):

  • 猫が好きです。

    neko ga suki desu。neko ga suki desu。ねこ が すき です。ネコ ガ スキ デス。

    I like cats.

  • 犬も好きです。

    inu mo suki desu。inu mo suki desu。いぬ も すき です。イヌ モ スキ デス。

    I also like dogs.

When replacing (ooをヲ):

  • パンを食べました。

    pan o tabemashita。pan o tabemasita。ぱん を たべました。パン ヲ タベマシタ。

    I ate bread.

  • ご飯も食べました。

    I also ate rice.

02

Combining with Other Particles

Unlike with (wawaはハ), (gagaがガ), and (ooをヲ), the particle (momoもモ) does not replace other particles such as (niniにニ), (eeへヘ), (dedeでデ), or (karakaraからカラ). Instead, it is added directly after them. This creates combinations like (ni moni moに もニ モ), (de mode moで もデ モ), and (kara mokara moから もカラ モ).
