Adverbial Form of Adjectives with -く

To change an (iiいイ)-adjective into an adverb, you modify its ending. This allows the word to describe how an action is done, much like adding "-ly" to an adjective in English (e.g., "slow" becomes "slowly").

The rule is to remove the final (iiいイ) from the adjective and replace it with (kukuくク).

Formation Examples

  • (hayai, fast) → (hayaku, quickly)
  • (yasui, cheap) → (yasuku, cheaply)
  • (kanashii, sad) → (kanashiku, sadly)

01

Modifying Verbs

The primary function of the (kukuくク)-form is to modify a verb. The adverb is typically placed directly before the verb it describes.

  • 彼は速く走ります。

kare wa hayaku hashirimasu.kare wa hayaku hasirimasu.かれ は はやく はしります.カレ ハ ハヤク ハシリマス.

    He runs quickly.

  • もっと大きく書いてください。

motto ōkiku kaite kudasai.motto ôkiku kaite kudasai.もっと おおきく かいて ください.モット オオキク カイテ クダサイ.

    Please write bigger.

  • 昨日は楽しく過ごしました。

kinō wa tanoshiku sugoshimashita.kinô wa tanosiku sugosimasita.きのう は たのしく すごしました.キノウ ハ タノシク スゴシマシタ.

    I spent yesterday enjoyably.

02

The Irregular Adjective: いい (ii)

The adjective (ii, good) is a common exception. It does not become (ikuikuいくイク). Instead, it uses its original dictionary form, (yoiyoiよいヨイ), to create the adverb (yokuyokuよくヨク).

Formation: (yoiyoiよいヨイ) → (yoku, well)

  • 日本語がよく分かります。

nihongo ga yoku wakarimasu.nihongo ga yoku wakarimasu.にほんご が よく わかります.ニホンゴ ガ ヨク ワカリマス.

    I understand Japanese well.

  • 昨日はよく寝ました。

kinō wa yoku nemashita.kinô wa yoku nemasita.きのう は よく ねました.キノウ ハ ヨク ネマシタ.

    I slept well yesterday.

03

Connecting Adjectives with ~くて (ーkute)

The (kukuくク)-form followed by the particle (teteてテ) is used to link two or more clauses, often to list attributes. For (iiいイ)-adjectives, this is the equivalent of saying "and".

  • このラーメンは安くて、おいしいです。

kono rāmen wa yasukute, oishii desu.kono râmen wa yasukute, oisii desu.この らあめん は やすくて, おいしい です.コノ ラーメン ハ ヤスクテ, オイシイ デス.

This ramen is cheap and delicious.

  • 彼女の髪は長くてきれいです。

kanojo no kami wa nagakute kirei desu.kanojo no kami wa nagakute kirei desu.かのじょ の かみ は ながくて きれい です.カノジョ ノ カミ ハ ナガクテ キレイ デス.

Her hair is long and beautiful.

  • その映画は面白くて、少し怖かったです。

That movie was interesting and a little scary.

04

Showing Change with ~くなる (ーkunaru)

When the (kukuくク)-form is followed by the verb (naru, to become), it expresses a change of state. This is a very common pattern used to describe something becoming a certain way.

Structure: Adjective stem + (kukuくク) + (narunaruなるナル)

  • だんだん寒くなりますね。

dandan samuku narimasu ne.dandan samuku narimasu ne.だんだん さむく なります ね.ダンダン サムク ナリマス ネ.

It's gradually getting cold, isn't it?

  • 日本語の勉強が楽しくなりました。

    The TV's volume got louder.

05

Contrast with な (na)-Adjectives

While (iiいイ)-adjectives use (kukuくク) to form adverbs, (nanaなナ)-adjectives use the particle (niniにニ) instead.

Using く (ku) (for い (i)-adjectives)

  • 彼はいつも優しく話します。

kare wa itsumo yasashiku hanashimasu.kare wa itsumo yasasiku hanasimasu.かれ は いつも やさしく はなします.カレ ハ イツモ ヤサシク ハナシマス.

    He always speaks kindly.

(From (yasashiiyasasiiやさしいヤサシイ))

Using に (ni) (for な (na)-adjectives)

  • 彼はいつも静かに話します。

kare wa itsumo shizuka ni hanashimasu.kare wa itsumo sizuka ni hanasimasu.かれ は いつも しずか に はなします.カレ ハ イツモ シズカ ニ ハナシマス.

    He always speaks quietly.

(From (shizukasizukaしずかシズカ))
