Conjunctions: 'và', 'nhưng'

The two most common conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses just like English and and but.

01

'Và' (and)

links items or ideas together:

  • Tôi có một chú chó và một con mèo.

    I have a dog and a cat.

  • Anh ấy cao và đẹp trai.

    He is tall and handsome.

02

'Nhưng' (but)

introduces a contrast:

  • Tôi mệt nhưng vui.

    I am tired but happy.

  • Cô ấy nhỏ nhưng rất khoẻ.

She is small but very strong.

Both conjunctions keep the same position as their English counterparts — between the two things being connected.
