Unlike English, which uses the single word "we" for all contexts, Vietnamese distinguishes between two types of "we" based on whether the listener is included in the group or not. This distinction is known as clusivity.
01
Exclusive 'We': Chúng tôi
Use when you want to say "we" but exclude the person you are talking to. It essentially means "I and others, but not you."
This is used when reporting information about yourself and your group to someone else.
Chúng tôi thích món ăn này.
We like this dish. (The speaker and their group like it; the listener's opinion is not included).
Ngày mai chúng tôi sẽ đi Hà Nội.
Tomorrow we will go to Hanoi. (The listener is staying behind).
02
Inclusive 'We': Chúng ta
Use when you want to include the listener in the group. It means "you and I" or "all of us together."
This is used for making suggestions, discussing shared situations, or stating general facts that apply to everyone present.
Chúng ta đi thôi.
Let's go. (Both the speaker and listener are leaving).
Chúng ta đều là bạn.
We are all friends.

Understanding the Structure
