Negation with 'không'

is the main negation word in Vietnamese. Place it directly before the verb or adjective to negate:

  • Tôi không hiểu.

    I do not understand.

  • Cô ấy không mệt.

    She is not tired.

  • Chúng tôi không có tiền.

    We do not have money.

'Không' as a Response

On its own, means no and is used to answer yes/no questions:

  • Bạn đói không? Không.

    Are you hungry? No.
