To describe an action that is happening right now, place the particle directly before the main verb. This is the primary way to form the continuous aspect in Vietnamese, equivalent to the English structure "to be + verb-ing" (e.g., is eating, are sleeping).
01
Actions in Progress
The most common use of is to show that an activity is currently taking place and has not yet finished. The structure is strictly Subject + đang + Verb.
Tôi đang uống cà phê.
I am drinking coffee.
Má đang nấu ăn.
Mom is cooking.
Ảnh đang coi ti vi.
He is watching TV.
02
Temporary States and Adjectives
Unlike English, Vietnamese allows you to use directly with adjectives without a connecting verb like "to be". This is used to emphasize a temporary state, feeling, or condition that is happening at the moment.
Tôi đang bận.
I am busy.
Em đang đói bụng.
I am hungry.
Trời đang mưa.
It is raining.
03
Past and Future Contexts
The particle does not strictly indicate "present time" by itself; it indicates "continuity." The actual time of the action is determined by context words like "yesterday" or "tomorrow."
If you use with a past time marker, it translates to "was/were doing." If used with a future marker, it translates to "will be doing."
Hôm qua tôi đang làm việc.
Yesterday I was working.
Lúc đó chỉ đang ngủ.
At that time she was sleeping.
04
Word Order Rules
The particle must always appear before the verb or adjective it modifies. It cannot be placed at the end of the sentence.
