Declension of 'два', 'три', 'четыре' and 'оба' — Russian Grammar

The numbers two, three and four, and (óba) (both), have their own declension, and they govern the genitive singular of the noun when they are in the nominative or the inanimate accusative.

Gender

(Dva) and (óba) have a separate feminine form; (tri) and (chetýrečetýre) do not.

(dva) / (dve) - two
(óba) / (óbe) - both

У меня́ две маши́ны и два велосипе́да.
U menyá dve mashíny i dva velosipéda.U menjá dve mašíny i dva velosipéda.
I have two cars and two bikes.
О́бе мои́ сёстры живу́т в Москве́.
Óbe moí syóstry zhivút v Moskvé.Óbe moí sjóstry živút v Moskvé.
Both my sisters live in Moscow.
О́ба бра́та рабо́тают.
Óba bráta rabótayut.Óba bráta rabótajut.
Both brothers work.

The Case Forms

Genitive / Prepositional: (dvukhdvux), (tryokhtrjox), (chetyryókhčetyrjóx), (obóikhobóix)
Dative: (dvum), (tryomtrjom), (chetyryómčetyrjóm), (obóim)
Instrumental: (dvumyádvumjá), (tremyátremjá), (chetyr'myáčetyrʹmjá), (obóimi)

In these cases, the noun follows in the plural of the same case.

Я рабо́таю с двумя́ колле́гами.
Ya rabótayu s dvumyá kollégami.Ja rabótaju s dvumjá kollégami.
I work with two colleagues.
Э́то сто́ит бо́льше трёх рубле́й.
Éto stóit ból'she tryokh rubléy.Éto stóit bólʹše trjox rubléj.
It costs more than three rubles.
Магази́н откры́т до четырёх часо́в.
Magazín otkrýt do chetyryókh chasóv.Magazín otkrýt do četyrjóx časóv.
The store is open until four o'clock.

With Animate Nouns

When an animate noun is the direct object, the number takes the genitive form.

Я ви́жу двух соба́к.
Ya vízhu dvukh sobák.Ja vížu dvux sobák.
I see two dogs.

Two and Three Times

Я хожу́ в спортза́л три ра́за в неде́лю.
Ya khozhú v sportzál tri ráza v nedélyu.Ja xožú v sportzál tri ráza v nedélju.
I go to the gym three times a week.
