Subordinate Clauses

A subordinate clause is part of a sentence that cannot stand on its own: that he is ill, because I'm tired, when I was young. In Russian, it is always separated from the main clause by a comma.

01

что (chto): That

(ChtoČto) introduces what someone says, thinks or knows. Unlike English that, it cannot be left out.

  • Я ду́маю, что еда́ должна́ быть о́строй.

Ya dúmayu, chto yedá dolzhná byt' óstroy.Ja dúmaju, čto jedá dolžná bytʹ óstroj.

I think the food should be spicy.

  • Жаль, что ты не эконо́мишь.

Zhal', chto ty ne ekonómish'.Žalʹ, čto ty ne ekonómišʹ.

    It's a pity you don't save.

  • Я зна́ю, что ты за́нят.

Ya znáyu, chto ty zányat.Ja znáju, čto ty zánjat.

    I know you're busy.

02

Reported Speech Keeps the Tense

Russian does not shift tenses in reported speech: what was said in the present stays in the present.

  • Он сказа́л, что он бо́лен.

On skazál, chto on bólen. On skazál, čto on bólen.

    He said he was ill.

03

потому́ что (potomú chto): Because

(Potomú chtoPotomú čto) gives a reason. (Poétomu) (that's why) introduces a result.

  • Я не иду́, потому́ что я уста́ла.

Ya ne idú, potomú chto ya ustála.Ja ne idú, potomú čto ja ustála.

I'm not going because I'm tired.

Ya ustála, poétomu ya idú domóy.Ja ustála, poétomu ja idú domój.

I'm tired, so I'm going home.

04

когда́ (kogdá): When

(Kogdá) is both the question word and the conjunction when. A future action after (kogdá) is in the future tense, unlike English.

  • Когда́ я был мо́лод, я жил в Кита́е.

Kogdá ya byl mólod, ya zhil v Kitáye.Kogdá ja byl mólod, ja žil v Kitáje.

When I was young, I lived in China.

  • Позвони́, когда́ прие́дешь.

05

е́сли (yésli): If

(YésliJésli) introduces a real condition. The future is used in both parts when the condition is about the future.

Yésli búdet dozhd', my ostánemsya dóma.Jésli búdet doždʹ, my ostánemsja dóma.

06

Question Words as Conjunctions

Indirect questions are introduced by the question word itself, and yes-no questions by (li).

Ya ne znáyu, gde on zhivyót.Ja ne znáju, gde on živjót.

I don't know where he lives.
