Past and Completed Actions with 'បាន'

Khmer has no past-tense ending. To mark an action as completed or set in the past, you place (baan) BEFORE the verb. The word does several unrelated jobs depending on where it sits, and the pre-verbal position is the one that means "past" — everything below concerns that position.

01

The Past Marker

Pre-verbal (baan) signals that the action already happened.

  • ខ្ញុំបានទៅផ្សារ

khñom baan tɨw phsaakhnom baan tuw phsaa

    I went to the market.

  • គាត់បានទិញឡាន

kŏət baan tɨñ laankoet baan tun laan

    He bought a car.

  • ខ្ញុំបានឃើញនាង

khñom baan khəəñ niəngkhnom baan kheen nieng

    I saw her.

02

Often Optional

When the time is already clear — from a time word like "yesterday" or from the situation — Khmer frequently leaves (baan) out and lets context carry the past meaning. It is added when the completion itself is what matters.

  • ខ្ញុំរៀននៅសាលាកាលពីម្សិលមិញ

khñom riən nɨw saalaa kaal pii msəl mɨñkhnom rien nuw saalaa kaal pii msel mun

    I studied at school yesterday.

03

Negating the Past

The past negative is the ordinary frame wrapped around (baan): (mɨnmun) + (baan) + verb + (tei) ("did not …").

  • ខ្ញុំមិនបានឃើញទេ

khñom mɨn baan khəəñ teikhnom mun baan kheen tei

    I did not see (it).

04

Don't Confuse Its Other Roles

The same syllable does two other jobs. On its own it is an ordinary verb meaning "to get / obtain". Placed AFTER the verb it means "manage to / succeed in", so (khñom baan tɨwkhnom baan tuw) is "I went" while (khñom tɨw baankhnom tuw baan) is "I can go". Position is the whole difference: before the verb it is past, after the verb it is ability.

  • So (baan) + verb (past) and verb + (baan) (ability) look alike but do opposite jobs — watch where it sits.
  • The same syllable rides along inside the passive pair (trəwtrew) + (baan) — there the passive meaning comes from (trəwtrew) itself, not from (baan) acting alone as this plain past marker. (trəwtrew) before a verb is what turns the subject into the one undergoing the action.
  • And it never combines with the future marker (nɨngnung) on the same verb — a negative future clause stops at (nɨngnung) + (mɨnmun) + verb + (tei), with no (baan) needed.
