(thlŏəpthloep) before a verb expresses experience: "to have ever done" or "used to do". It answers "have you ever…?" — whether something has happened at some point in life — rather than placing an event at a particular time.
01
'Have Ever / Used To'
khñom thlŏəp tɨw prɑteih baarangkhnom thloep tuw prateih baarang
I have been to France before.
nĕək thlŏəp khəəñ niəngneek thloep kheen nieng
You have seen her before.
The focus is on the experience existing at some point, not on exactly when it happened.
02
Contrast with the Past Marker '
Where (baan) simply says an action happened, (thlŏəpthloep) says you have the experience of it. "I have eaten there (at some point)" uses (thlŏəpthloep); "I ate (just now)" uses (baan).
khñom baan ñamkhnom baan nam
I ate / I have eaten (this time).
khñom thlŏəp ñamkhnom thloep nam
I have eaten it before (in my life).
03
Asking 'Have You Ever...?'
The question form drops (mɨnmun) entirely and closes the sentence with (tei). That word does two jobs in Khmer — closing a negative, and turning a statement into a yes/no question — and here it is doing the second. (thlŏəpthloep) stays right before the verb; the final (tei) alone is what makes it "have you ever…?"
thlŏəp lɨɨ pii krom nih teithloep luu pii krom nih tei
Have you ever heard of this band?
nĕək thlŏəp tɨw tii nuh teineek thloep tuw tii nuh tei
Have you ever been there?
- This closing (tei) is doing question duty here — compare it with the negating (mɨn ... teimun ... tei) pair just below, which reuses the very same final word for a different job.
04
The Negative: 'Never'
It's (mɨnmun) — not the closing (tei) — that marks this as negative rather than the question above. Negated, (thlŏəpthloep) becomes "have never": (mɨnmun) + (thlŏəpthloep) … (tei).
khñom mɨn thlŏəp khəəñ teikhnom mun thloep kheen tei
I have never seen (it).
