Future Actions with 'នឹង'

To talk about the future, Khmer places (nɨngnung) before the verb. As with every Khmer "tense", the verb itself does not change — (nɨngnung) simply projects the action forward in time.

01

'Will / Going To'

  • ខ្ញុំនឹងទៅ

    khñom nɨng tɨwkhnom nung tuw

    I will go.

  • ខ្ញុំនឹងទិញវា

khñom nɨng tɨñ viəkhnom nung tun vie

    I will buy it.

  • ខ្ញុំនឹងទៅផ្ទះ

khñom nɨng tɨw phtĕəhkhnom nung tuw phteeh

    I will go home.

02

Intention and Prediction

(nɨngnung) covers both a plan ("I intend to") and a forecast ("it will happen"). It is the marker for anything not yet realised.

  • ថ្ងៃស្អែកនឹងត្រជាក់

thngay sʼaek nɨng trɑcĕəkthngay saek nung traceek

Tomorrow will be cold. (forecast, not a personal plan)

03

Often Left to Context

Just like the past, the future is frequently shown by a time word alone — "tomorrow", "next week" — with no (nɨngnung) at all. The marker is added when you want to make the futurity explicit or stress the intention.

  • ខ្ញុំធ្វើវានៅពេលក្រោយ

khñom thvəə viə nɨw peel kraoykhnom thvee vie nuw peel kraoy

    I'll do it later.

04

Negating the Future

The negative wraps the ordinary frame around it: (nɨngnung) + (mɨnmun) … (tei), or simply negate the verb and let a time word show it is the future.

  • ខ្ញុំនឹងមិនធ្វើដូច្នេះទេ

khñom nɨng mɨn thvəə doucneh teikhnom nung mun thvee doucneh tei

    I won't do that.

05

A Look-alike to Avoid

There is another word written (nɨngnung) that means the preposition "with". It is unrelated to the future marker; only its position — before a verb (future) vs. before a noun ("with") — tells them apart.

  • ខ្ញុំនឹងទៅផ្សារ

khñom nɨng tɨw phsaakhnom nung tuw phsaa

I will go to the market. (future: នឹង before the verb)

  • វាសមនឹងអ្នក

viə sɑɑm nɨng nĕəkvie saam nung neek

It suits you. (preposition: នឹង before the noun)
