Expressing 'Also / Too' with 'ក៏ ...

"Also / too" is usually expressed as a frame: (kɑɑkaa) before the verb and (dae) at the end of the clause. The two work together like a pair of brackets meaning "likewise".

01

The 'ក៏ … Frame

kŏət kɑɑ ciə kruu bɑngriən daekoet kaa cie kruu bangrien dae

    He is also a teacher.

khñom kɑɑ cɑng tɨw daekhnom kaa cang tuw dae

    I want to go too.

02

'ដែរ' Alone for 'Too'

Sentence-final (dae) by itself adds "too" to a statement, agreeing with something just said.

    I know her too.

  • The compound (phɑɑng daephaang dae) is a common, slightly more emphatic variant of the same sentence-final "too" — it can replace (dae) at the end of the (kɑɑ … daekaa … dae) frame as well.

khñom kɑɑ chɨɨ krɑpĕəh nɨng phdaasaay phɑɑng daekhnom kaa chuu krapeeh nung phdaasaay phaang dae

I also have a stomach ache, and a cold too.

03

'ដែរ' Softens Wh-Questions

The same (dae) gently softens a wh-question, giving it a friendly, casual tone — like adding "…, then?" in English.

taə nĕək chmŭəh ʼvəy daetae neek chmueh vey dae

    And what's your name?

04

'ដែរឬទេ' — a Yes/No Tag with 'ដែរ'

(dae) also fuses into the yes/no tag (dae rɨɨ teidae ruu tei), "...or not?" — asking whether something is true "as well," the same additive sense as the also/too frame, just packaged as a question.

taə nĕək miən kaariəkruuh dae rɨɨ teitae neek mien kaariekruuh dae ruu tei

Do you have diarrhea too, or not?

taə nĕək tɨw tŏən rŭətphləəng dae rɨɨ teitae neek tuw toen ruetphleeng dae ruu tei

Did you catch the train too, or not?

05

'ក៏' Outside the 'Also' Frame

(kɑɑkaa) also does two other jobs that have nothing to do with "also" — only context, not the word itself, tells them apart from the frame above.

  • Paired with (tŭəhciə, "even though") at the start and (dae) at the end, (kɑɑkaa) marks a concession: "even though X, Y still happens."

tŭəhciə phək kaafee kɑɑ khñom nɨw tae ngɔɔnguykeing daetuehcie phek kaafee kaa khnom nuw tae ngoonguykeing dae

Even though I drink coffee, I still feel sleepy.

  • In the fixed reply (kɑɑ baankaa baan), (kɑɑkaa) plus (baan) ("OK, fine") together just mean "okay, then" / "that works" — a set idiom, not an instance of the also/too pattern.

kɑɑ baan cuəp kniə thngay sʼaekkaa baan cuep knie thngay saek

    Okay then! See you tomorrow!

  • To recap: the full (kɑɑ … daekaa … dae) frame is the safest way to say "also"; the lone (dae) (or the emphatic (phɑɑng daephaang dae)) at the end is the quick, conversational version — and neither is related to the concessive or idiomatic (kɑɑkaa) uses just above.
