"If …" clauses open with (baəbae), or its fuller, more careful form (prɑsən baəprasen bae). Khmer has no special verb form for hypotheticals — the conditional meaning lives entirely in these connectors plus the context.
01
The 'If' Clause Typically Comes First
Most often, state the condition with (baəbae), then the result. The result clause very often carries the future (nɨngnung).
បើខ្ញុំរកប្រាក់បានច្រើនជាងនេះ ខ្ញុំនឹងទិញផ្ទះល្វែងធំជាងនេះ
baə khñom rɔɔk prak baan craən ciəng nih khñom nɨng tɨñ phtĕəh lvɛɛng thom ciəng nihbae khnom rook prak baan craen cieng nih khnom nung tun phteeh lveeng thom cieng nih
If I earn more money, I will buy a bigger apartment.
បើអ្នកមកខ្ញុំនឹងសប្បាយ
baə nĕək mɔɔk khñom nɨng sapbaaybae neek mook khnom nung sapbaay
If you come, I will be happy.
02
'ប្រសិនបើ' for Care and Formality
(prɑsən baəprasen bae) is the weightier variant of plain (baəbae), common in writing and careful speech, but identical in meaning.
ប្រសិនបើអ្នកមិនប្រញាប់ទេ អ្នកនឹងខកខានការហោះហើររបស់អ្នក
prɑsən baə nĕək mɨn prɑñap tei nĕək nɨng khɑkkhaan kaa hɑhhaə rɔbɑh nĕəkprasen bae neek mun pranap tei neek nung khakkhaan kaa hahhae robah neek
If you don't hurry, you will miss your flight.
ប្រសិនបើអ្នកសួរសំណួរ អ្នកនឹងទទួលបានចម្លើយ
prɑsən baə nĕək suə sɑmnuə nĕək nɨng tɔtuəl baan cɑmləəyprasen bae neek sue samnue neek nung totuel baan camleey
If you ask a question, you will get an answer.
03
No Special Verb Form
Even a contrary-to-fact idea like "if I were rich" uses the same plain verbs — no subjunctive, no separate hypothetical past. (ciəcie) "to be" stays exactly as it always is; only (baəbae)/ (prɑsən baəprasen bae) and (nɨngnung) mark the sentence as hypothetical.
បើខ្ញុំជាអ្នកមាន ខ្ញុំនឹងមានផ្ទះល្វែងធំជាងនេះ
baə khñom ciə nĕək miən khñom nɨng miən phtĕəh lvɛɛng thom ciəng nihbae khnom cie neek mien khnom nung mien phteeh lveeng thom cieng nih
If I were rich, I would have a bigger apartment.
04
Clause Order Is Flexible
Condition-first is the more common pattern, but Khmer conditionals aren't locked to it — the result clause can just as easily come first. What keeps the sentence unambiguous isn't word order: whichever clause carries (baəbae) or (prɑsən baəprasen bae) is always the condition, no matter where it falls.
ទូរសព្ទមកខ្ញុំ ប្រសិនបើអ្នកត្រូវការអ្វីមួយ
tuurĕəʼsap mɔɔk khñom prɑsən baə nĕək trəw kaa ʼvəy muəytuureesap mook khnom prasen bae neek trew kaa vey muey
Call me if you need anything.
ខ្ញុំនឹងមិនធ្វើដូច្នេះទេ ប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំជាអ្នក
khñom nɨng mɨn thvəə doucneh tei prɑsən baə khñom ciə nĕəkkhnom nung mun thvee doucneh tei prasen bae khnom cie neek
I wouldn't do that, if I were you.

តែបើគិតម្តងទៀត នោះជាគំនិតអាក្រក់។
tae baə kɨt mdɑɑng tiət nuh ciə kumnɨt ʼaakrɑk.tae bae kut mdaang tiet nuh cie kumnut aakrak.
On second thought, that is a bad idea.
