(soum) placed before a verb turns it into a polite request — the standard Khmer "please". It is used for invitations, instructions and courteous appeals alike, and it never changes form.
01
'សូម' + Verb
សូមអង្គុយ
soum ʼɑngkuysoum angkuy
Please sit.
សូមនិយាយម្តងទៀត
soum niyiəy mdɑɑng tiətsoum niyiey mdaang tiet
Please say it again.
សូមមកឱ្យលឿន
soum mɔɔk ʼaoy lɨənsoum mook aoy luen

02
Warm Invitations with 'អញ្ជើញ'
For a welcoming invitation, (soum) teams up with (ʼɑñcəəñanceen) ("to invite / go ahead"): (soum ʼɑñcəəñsoum anceen) … = "please, do go ahead and …".
សូមអញ្ជើញចូល
soum ʼɑñcəəñ coulsoum anceen coul
Please come in.
03
The Softener 'ផង'
The little word (phɑɑngphaang) added after a verb softens a request further, with a sense of "…, please / … as well". It is a gentle, friendly add-on.
សូមយកកាបូបរបស់អ្នកមកផង
soum yɔɔk kaaboup rɔbɑh nĕək mɔɔk phɑɑngsoum yook kaaboup robah neek mook phaang
Please bring your bag too.
04
Polite Prohibition
Combine it with the negative command word for "please don't": (soum) + (kom) + verb.
សូមកុំភ្លេច
soum kom phlɨcsoum kom phluc
Please don't forget.
