Present Progressive with いる

The present progressive is formed by changing a verb to its te-form and adding (iruiruいるイル). This versatile structure is used to express ongoing actions, continuing states, and habits, similar to the "-ing" form in English, but with some key differences.

01

Ongoing Actions

This is the most direct use of the (ーte iruーte iruーて いるーテ イル) form. It describes an action that is currently in progress at the moment of speaking.

  • 今、本を読んでいます。

    ima, hon o yonde imasu.ima, hon o yonde imasu.いま, ほん を よんで います.イマ, ホン ヲ ヨンデ イマス.

I am reading a book now.

  • 子供たちが公園で遊んでいる。

kodomotachi ga kōen de asonde iru.kodomotati ga kôen de asonde iru.こどもたち が こうえん で あそんで いる.コドモタチ ガ コウエン デ アソンデ イル.

The children are playing in the park.

  • 雨が降っています。

ame ga futte imasu.ame ga futte imasu.あめ が ふって います.アメ ガ フッテ イマス.

    It is raining.

02

Continuing States (Resultant States)

Many verbs use (ーte iruーte iruーて いるーテ イル) to describe a state that continues as the result of a past action. The action itself is finished, but its effects remain. This is common with verbs that describe an instantaneous change.

For example, (kekkon surukekkon suruけっこん するケッコン スル) is the action of "getting married." The state of "being married" is expressed as (kekkon shite irukekkon site iruけっこん して いるケッコン シテ イル).

  • 私は結婚しています。

watashi wa kekkon shite imasu.watasi wa kekkon site imasu.わたし は けっこん して います.ワタシ ハ ケッコン シテ イマス.

    I am married.

  • 窓が開いています。

mado ga aite imasu.mado ga aite imasu.まど が あいて います.マド ガ アイテ イマス.

The window is open. (The action of opening is done, the state of being open continues.)

Other common verbs in this category include:

  • (shitte irusitte iruしって いるシッテ イル) - to know (the state resulting from getting to know something)
  • (motte irumotte iruもって いるモッテ イル) - to have/possess (the state resulting from taking or acquiring something)
  • (sunde irusunde iruすんで いるスンデ イル) - to live in (the state resulting from moving to a place)
  • (kite irukite iruきて いるキテ イル) - to be wearing (the state resulting from putting on clothes)
  • 彼の電話番号を知っていますか?

kare no denwa bangō o shitte imasu ka?kare no denwa bangô o sitte imasu ka?かれ の でんわ ばんごう を しって います か?カレ ノ デンワ バンゴウ ヲ シッテ イマス カ?

Do you know his phone number?

03

Habitual or Repeated Actions

(ーte iruーte iruーて いるーテ イル) can also describe actions that are performed regularly or habitually over a period of time. This usage is often accompanied by adverbs of frequency like (mainichimainitiまいにちマイニチ), every day or (itsumoitsumoいつもイツモ), always.

  • 毎朝コーヒーを飲んでいます。

    maiasa kōhī o nonde imasu.maiasa kôhî o nonde imasu.まいあさ こおひい を のんで います.マイアサ コーヒー ヲ ノンデ イマス.

04

Special Cases: Verbs of Motion

Verbs of movement like (ikuikuいくイク), to go, (kurukuruくるクル), to come, and (kaerukaeruかえるカエル), to return use the (ーte iruーte iruーて いるーテ イル) form to indicate a resultant state. It means the person has completed the journey and is now at the destination.

  • 父は大阪へ行っています。

    chichi wa Ōsaka e itte imasu.titi wa Ôsaka e itte imasu.ちち は おおさか へ いって います.チチ ハ オオサカ ヘ イッテ イマス.

This is different from describing the action of traveling. To say someone is "on their way," a different structure is used.
