The sentence-final particle (neneねネ) is used to create a sense of shared experience, opinion, or information between the speaker and the listener. It turns a simple statement into a more interactive and collaborative one, often inviting a response or acknowledgment. Its function can be compared to English tag questions like "isn't it?", "right?", or conversational softeners like "you know".
01
Seeking Agreement or Confirmation
The most common use of (neneねネ) is to state an opinion or fact while simultaneously checking if the listener agrees or is aware of the same information. The speaker is not asking a neutral question but rather expects the listener to share their view.
When sharing a subjective opinion or feeling:
今日は暑いですね。
kyō wa atsui desu ne.kyô wa atsui desu ne.きょう は あつい です ね.キョウ ハ アツイ デス ネ.
It's hot today, isn't it?
このケーキ、おいしいね!
kono kēki, oishii ne!kono kêki, oisii ne!この けえき, おいしい ね!コノ ケーキ, オイシイ ネ!
This cake is delicious, right!
静かですね。
shizuka desu ne.sizuka desu ne.しずか です ね.シズカ デス ネ.
It's quiet, isn't it?
When confirming a piece of information the speaker believes to be true:
会議は3時からですね。
kaigi wa sanji kara desu ne.kaigi wa sanji kara desu ne.かいぎ は さんじ から です ね.カイギ ハ サンジ カラ デス ネ.
The meeting is from 3 o'clock, right?
田中さんは明日、休みだね。
tanaka-san wa ashita, yasumi da ne.tanaka-san wa asita, yasumi da ne.たなか-さん は あした, やすみ だ ね.タナカ-サン ハ アシタ, ヤスミ ダ ネ.
Tanaka-san has the day off tomorrow, doesn't he?
02
Softening Statements and Requests
Adding (neneねネ) can make a statement, piece of advice, or a light command sound gentler, warmer, and more considerate. It removes any sense of abruptness and adds a layer of friendliness.
気をつけて帰ってね。
ki o tsukete kaette ne.ki o tsukete kaette ne.き を つけて かえって ね.キ ヲ ツケテ カエッテ ネ.
Get home safely, okay?
頑張ってね!
ganbatte ne!ganbatte ne!がんばって ね!ガンバッテ ネ!
Do your best! / Good luck!
また連絡してね。
mata renraku shite ne.mata renraku site ne.また れんらく して ね.マタ レンラク シテ ネ.
Get in touch again, okay?
In these cases, (neneねネ) doesn't seek strong agreement but rather fosters a positive, shared feeling.
03
The Role of Intonation
The nuance of (neneねネ) can change depending on whether your voice goes up or down at the end of the sentence.
Rising Intonation (ね? (ne?))
This sounds more like a genuine question seeking confirmation. The speaker is less certain and is actively asking the listener to verify the information.
これはあなたの傘だね?
kore wa anata no kasa da ne?kore wa anata no kasa da ne?これ は あなた の かさ だ ね?コレ ハ アナタ ノ カサ ダ ネ?
This is your umbrella, right?
もう行く時間だね?
mō iku jikan da ne?mô iku jikan da ne?もう いく じかん だ ね?モウ イク ジカン ダ ネ?
It's time to go now, isn't it?
Falling Intonation (ね。 (ne.))
This is more of a statement that assumes agreement. The speaker is confident that the listener shares the same feeling or knowledge and is simply remarking on it to create a shared moment.
いい天気だね。
ii tenki da ne.ii tenki da ne.いい てんき だ ね.イイ テンキ ダ ネ.
It's nice weather, isn't it.

That movie was moving, wasn't it.
04
Contrast with よ (yo)
While both are sentence-final particles, (neneねネ) and (yoyoよヨ) have opposite functions.
- (neneねネ) is inclusive. It assumes shared knowledge and seeks to confirm it. Think of it as building a bridge to the listener.
- (yoyoよヨ) is informative. It presents new information that the speaker believes the listener does not know. Think of it as pointing something out to the listener.

05
The Combination よね (yo ne)
(yo neyo neよ ねヨ ネ) is a common combination that blends the functions of both particles. It is used when the speaker is stating a fact or opinion they are quite sure about, and also believes the listener already knows or agrees with it. It strongly seeks confirmation of this shared understanding.
明日はパーティーですよね。
ashita wa pātī desu yo ne.asita wa pâtî desu yo ne.あした は ぱあてぃい です よ ね.アシタ ハ パーティー デス ヨ ネ.
Tomorrow is the party, right? (We both know this, I'm just confirming).
