な-Adjectives

(nanaなナ)-adjectives, also known as adjectival nouns, are one of two main types of adjectives. They are used to describe nouns, but unlike (iiいイ)-adjectives, they do not conjugate themselves. Instead, they rely on the copula (dadaだダ) or (desudesuですデス) to show tense and politeness.

01

Modifying Nouns with な (na)

When a (nanaなナ)-adjective comes directly before a noun to describe it, the particle (nanaなナ) must be placed between the adjective and the noun.

The structure is: (nanaなナ)-adjective + (nanaなナ) + Noun

  • 静かな図書館

shizuka na toshokansizuka na tosyokanしずか な としょかんシズカ ナ トショカン

    a quiet library

  • 彼は親切な人です。

kare wa shinsetsu na hito desu.kare wa sinsetsu na hito desu.かれ は しんせつ な ひと です.カレ ハ シンセツ ナ ヒト デス.

    He is a kind person.

  • これは有名な絵です。

    kore wa yūmei na e desu.kore wa yûmei na e desu.これ は ゆうめい な へ です.コレ ハ ユウメイ ナ ヘ デス.

02

Using な (na)-Adjectives to End a Sentence

When a (nanaなナ)-adjective is used at the end of a sentence to make a statement (e.g., "The library is quiet"), it is followed by a form of the copula (dadaだダ) for plain speech or (desudesuですデス) for polite speech. The adjective itself does not change.

  • この図書館は静かだ。

kono toshokan wa shizuka da.kono tosyokan wa sizuka da.この としょかん は しずか だ.コノ トショカン ハ シズカ ダ.

    This library is quiet.

03

04

Using な (na)-Adjectives as Adverbs

To use a (nanaなナ)-adjective to describe a verb (i.e., as an adverb), the (nanaなナ) is replaced with the particle (niniにニ).

The structure is: (nanaなナ)-adjective + (niniにニ) + Verb

05

The Noun-like Nature of な (na)-Adjectives

Many (nanaなナ)-adjectives are also nouns themselves. This is why they require a particle like (nanaなナ) or a copula like (dadaだダ) to connect to other parts of a sentence. The context determines whether the word is being used as a noun or as an adjective.

For example, (anzenanzenあんぜんアンゼン) can mean the noun safety or the adjective safe.

  • 安全が一番大切です。

anzen ga ichiban taisetsu desu.anzen ga itiban taisetsu desu.あんぜん が いちばん たいせつ です.アンゼン ガ イチバン タイセツ デス.

Safety is the most important thing. (Used as a noun)

  • ここは安全な場所です。

koko wa anzen na basho desu.koko wa anzen na basyo desu.ここ は あんぜん な ばしょ です.ココ ハ アンゼン ナ バショ デス.
