Conjunctive Form

The conjunctive form (also known as the conjunctive participle) is a fundamental verb structure in Hindi used to connect two actions performed by the same subject. It combines two sentences into one, indicating that the first action is completed before the second one begins.

To form this, you take the root of the verb (the infinitive without (nāna)) and add the suffix (kar).

  • Root of (jānājana) - to go is (jāja) + (kar) = (jākarjakar).
  • Root of (paṛhnāparhna) - to read is (paṛhparh) + (kar) = (paṛhkarparhkar).

01

Sequential Actions

The most common use of this form is to express "having done X, I did Y". It replaces the word "and" when listing a sequence of events. The action with (kar) is always the one that happened first.

  • मैं घर जाकर खाना खाऊँगा।

maiṃ ghar jākar khānā khāūṅgā.maiṃ ghar jakar khana khaunga.

I will go home and eat food (Having gone home, I will eat).

  • उसने पत्र लिखकर पोस्ट किया।

usne patr likhkar posṭ kiyā.usne patr likhkar posṭ kiya.

He wrote the letter and posted it.

  • बच्चे दूध पीकर सो गए।

bacce dūdh pīkar so gae.bachche dudh pikar so gae.

The children drank milk and slept.

02

Independence from Tense

The verb ending in (kar) does not carry a tense marker itself. The time of the action (past, present, or future) is determined entirely by the main verb at the end of the sentence. The conjunctive verb simply relates to the main verb.

  • वह नहाकर पूजा करता है।

vah nahākar pūjā kartā hai.wah nahakar puja karta hai.

He bathes and prays. (Present Habit)

  • वह नहाकर पूजा करेगा।

vah nahākar pūjā karegā.wah nahakar puja karega.

He will bathe and pray. (Future)

  • वह नहाकर पूजा करने लगा।

vah nahākar pūjā karne lagā.wah nahakar puja karne laga.

He bathed and began to pray. (Past)

03

Expressing Manner (Adverbial Use)

Sometimes, the conjunctive form does not indicate a sequence of two separate events, but rather how the main action is performed. In this context, it translates to "by doing" or "while doing".

  • उसने हँसकर स्वागत किया।

usne haṃskar svāgat kiyā.usne haṃskar swagat kiya.

He welcomed (us) smilingly (by smiling).

  • चोर दौड़कर भाग गया।

cor dauṛkar bhāg gayā.chor daurkar bhag gaya.

The thief ran away (escaped by running).

  • कृपया सोचकर बोलिए।

    kṛpayā sockar bolie.krpaya sochkar bolie.

    Please speak thoughtfully (after thinking).

04

The Irregular Verb 'To Do'

The verb (karnākarna) - to do is slightly irregular in this form. Instead of adding just (kar) to the root, it usually takes the form (karke). While (karkar) is grammatically possible, (karke) is the standard form used in daily language.

  • वह काम करके चला गया।

vah kām karke calā gayā.wah kam karke chala gaya.

He did the work and left.

  • मुझे यह जानकर खुशी हुई।

mujhe yah jānkar khuśī huī.mujhe yah jankar khushi hui.

I was happy to know this (Having known this, happiness happened to me).

05

Important Rule: Same Subject

For the conjunctive form to be used correctly, the person doing the first action must be the same person doing the second action. You cannot use this form if the subjects change between the two clauses.

  • मैं टीवी देखकर सोया।

maiṃ ṭīvī dekhkar soyā.maiṃ ṭiwi dekhkar soya.

I watched TV and slept. (Correct: I did both).
