This verb form, often called the "aorist past" or "hypothetical past," is used to talk about unreal situations, past habits, and polite requests. It combines the aorist tense marker (a form of -r) with the past tense marker (-di) and a personal suffix. Its meaning is often equivalent to "would" or "used to" in English.
The basic structure is:
Verb Stem + Aorist Suffix (-r, -ar, -er, -ır, -ir, -ur, -ür) + Past Suffix (-di) + Personal Suffix
For example, with the verb (to come):
- (I would come / I used to come)
- (you would come / you used to come)
- (he/she/it would come / used to come)
- (we would come / we used to come)
- (you (plural/formal) would come / used to come)
- (they would come / used to come)

Use 1: Hypothetical Situations
This is the most common use, describing what "would" happen or "would have happened" if a certain condition were met. It is almost always paired with the conditional mood (-se/-sa) in an "if... then..." structure. The "if" clause takes the conditional, and the "then" clause takes this hypothetical past form.
Zamanım olsaydı, sana yardım ederdim.
If I had time, I would help you.
Daha dikkatli olsaydın, bardağı kırmazdın.
If you had been more careful, you wouldn't have broken the glass.
Bunu bilseydim, asla oraya gitmezdim.
If I had known this, I would never have gone there.

Use 2: Past Habits and Routines
This form is also used to describe actions that were done regularly or habitually in the past, but are no longer. In this context, it translates to "used to" or "would." This is different from the simple past (-di), which describes a single, completed event.
Compare:
- - I went to the cinema yesterday. (A single event)
- - I used to go to the cinema every week in the past. (A past habit)
More examples:
Çocukken her yaz dedemleri ziyaret ederdik.
When we were children, we would visit our grandparents every summer.
Babam akşamları bize masal okurdu.
My father used to read us stories in the evenings.

Use 3: Polite Requests and Offers
In questions, this form can be used to make requests, offers, or suggestions sound more polite and less direct.
Pencereyi açar mıydınız?
Would you mind opening the window?
Bir fincan kahve içer miydiniz?
Would you like a cup of coffee?
Bana bu konuda yardım eder miydiniz?
Would you help me with this matter?

Negative Form
The negative is formed using the negative aorist suffix (-mez/-maz) before the past tense marker.
Verb Stem + -me/-ma + -z + Past Suffix (-di) + Personal Suffix
O kadar param olsaydı bile o elbiseyi almazdım.
Even if I had that much money, I wouldn't buy that dress.
Biz gençken teknoloji bu kadar yaygın olmazdı.
When we were young, technology wouldn't be this widespread.
