Expressing Needs with 'ihtiyaç'

To express a need for something, the noun (need) is used in a common structure with the words (there is/exists) and (there isn't/doesn't exist). This construction literally means "my need for X exists".

The basic formula is:

[Thing needed] + Dative Suffix (-a/-e) + ihtiyaç + Possessive Suffix + var

01

The Core Structure: Positive Statements

This structure has three main components:

1. The Object of Need + Dative Case: The noun for the thing you need takes the dative case suffix, -a or -e, according to vowel harmony. This suffix indicates direction or purpose, similar to "to" or "for" in English. If the noun ends in a vowel, a buffer letter -y- is added: → (to water), → (to a car).

2. + Possessive Suffix: The word itself is modified with a possessive suffix to show who has the need.

  • - my need
  • - your need (singular)
  • - his/her/its need
  • - our need
  • - your need (plural/formal)
  • - their need

3. : The sentence ends with , meaning "exists".

Putting it all together, literally translates to "To water, my need exists," which is the standard way to say "I need water."

  • Biraz dinlenmeye ihtiyacım var.

I need to rest a little.

  • Onun yardıma ihtiyacı var.

    He/she needs help.

  • Yeni bir telefona ihtiyacımız var.

    We need a new phone.

02

Negative Statements and Questions

To form negative statements, simply replace with (doesn't exist).

  • Senin tavsiyene ihtiyacım yok.

    I don't need your advice.

  • Daha fazla zamana ihtiyaçları yok.

    They don't need more time.

To ask a question, add the question particle after .

  • Bir şemsiyeye ihtiyacın var mı?

    Do you need an umbrella?

  • Sizin bir haritaya ihtiyacınız var mı?

Do you (plural/formal) need a map?

03

Needing to Do Something (Verbs)

When the need is to perform an action (a verb), the verb is first turned into a verbal noun using the suffix -ma/-me. Then, this verbal noun takes the dative case suffix -ya/-ye.

The structure is: [Verb Stem] + -maya/-meye + + Possessive Suffix +

  • Uyumaya ihtiyacım var.

    I need to sleep.

  • Biraz konuşmaya ihtiyacımız var.

We need to talk a bit.

  • Acele etmeye ihtiyacın yok.

    You don't need to hurry.

04

General or Impersonal Needs

If you want to state that a need exists in general, without specifying who has the need, you can omit the possessive suffix from . This creates an impersonal statement.

  • Bu projeyi bitirmek için daha fazla zamana ihtiyaç var.

More time is needed to finish this project.

  • Burada daha fazla sandalyeye ihtiyaç var.

    More chairs are needed here.
