The particle is placed immediately before a verb to indicate that an action has been completed. While it is frequently used to translate the English past tense (did, went, saw), its primary function is to mark the "perfect aspect." This means it focuses on the fact that the action is finished or the result is currently in effect.
01
Marking Past Actions
The most common use of is to describe events that happened in the past. It functions similarly to the English "-ed" ending or irregular past forms like "ate" or "bought."
Hôm qua tôi đã đi làm.
Yesterday I went to work.
Anh ấy đã mua một chiếc xe mới.
He bought a new car.
Họ đã về quê thăm ngoại.
They went back to the countryside to visit grandma.
02
Emphasis and Context
Vietnamese relies heavily on context. If a sentence already contains a time marker indicating the past (like "yesterday," "last year," or "just now"), is often optional. Native speakers frequently omit it in casual conversation if the timing is clear. However, you should use when you want to emphasize that the action definitely happened or is fully completed.
Compare these two sentences:
- Hôm qua tôi ăn phở. (Yesterday I ate pho.) - The time word "Hôm qua" (yesterday) makes the tense clear.
- Hôm qua tôi đã ăn phở. (Yesterday I did eat pho.) - Adding adds formal structure or emphasis to the completion.
03
Using 'Đã' with 'Rồi' (Already)
To express the idea that something has "already" happened (similar to the English Present Perfect tense), is often combined with the word . While goes before the verb, is placed at the end of the sentence. This combination emphasizes that the action is done and dusted.
Má đã nấu cơm rồi.
Mom has already cooked rice.
Tôi đã uống cà phê rồi.
I have already drunk coffee.
Em đã hiểu rồi.
I have understood (already).
04
Describing Past States (Used To)
Beyond physical actions, can be used with verbs of being or state to indicate something that was true in the past but is no longer the case. This is similar to the English phrase "used to."
Sài Gòn đã rất khác xưa.
Saigon used to be very different in the past.
Cô ấy đã là giáo viên.
She used to be a teacher.
05
Relative Time
Because marks completion rather than just "past time," it can technically be used in sentences talking about the future, provided the action will be finished by that future moment. This is less common for beginners but useful to recognize.
Ngày mai, tôi đã làm xong bài tập.
By tomorrow, I will have finished the homework.
