Contemporary adverbial participles describe an additional action that happens at the same time as the main verb. They function like adverbs, modifying the main action by explaining "how" or "when" it occurs. In English, these often correspond to the "-ing" form in phrases like "Walking down the street, I saw a cat."
01
Formation
These participles are formed from imperfective verbs, as they describe an ongoing process. To create the form, take the third person plural of the present tense (the "they" form) and replace the final with .
- (to think) → (they think) → (thinking)
- (to write) → (they write) → (writing)
- (to have) → (they have) → (having)
The verb (to be) is slightly irregular but follows a similar logic based on the future stem, resulting in (being).
Będąc młodym, dużo podróżował.
Being young, he traveled a lot.
Pisząc list, płakała.
Writing the letter, she was crying.
02
The "Same Subject" Rule
This is the most critical rule for using adverbial participles correctly. The action described by the participle and the main action of the sentence must be performed by the same subject.
If the subjects are different, you cannot use this form. You must use a full clause with words like "when" or "while" instead.
- Correct: (Walking to work, I bought coffee.) → I was walking, and I bought the coffee.
- Incorrect: (Walking to work, rain started falling.) → This implies the rain was walking to work.
Słuchając muzyki, sprzątam pokój.
Listening to music, I clean the room.
Nie chcąc przeszkadzać, wyszedłem.
Not wanting to disturb, I left.
03
Simultaneity
These forms are strictly for contemporary actions. The activity in the participle phrase must happen simultaneously with the main verb. It does not matter if the main sentence is in the past, present, or future tense; the participle always indicates that the background action is happening right now relative to the main verb.
Jadąc samochodem, rozmawiał przez telefon.
Driving the car, he was talking on the phone.
Stojąc w kolejce, czytam wiadomości.
Standing in line, I read the news.
04
Negation and Reflexive Verbs
To negate these participles, place the particle separately before the participle. It is written as two separate words.
Nie widząc wyjścia, zaczął krzyczeć.
Not seeing an exit, he started screaming.
For reflexive verbs (verbs with ), the reflexive pronoun remains separate and can be placed either before or after the participle, depending on sentence rhythm and emphasis.
Myjąc się, śpiewał.
Washing himself, he sang.
