Persian grammar · A1

Progressive with داشتَن

The second Persian progressive is the one people actually say. It puts (dâštandâshtandaštn), "to have", in front of an ordinary present tense, and it means that the action is going on right now.

01

The Pattern

Both verbs are conjugated, and both agree with the subject. (dâštandâshtandaštn) comes first and carries no other meaning here - it has nothing to do with having.

  • ⁧مَن دارَم بِه خانِه می‌رَوَم.⁩

man dâram be xâne mi-ravamman dâram be khâne mi-ravammn darm b xan my-rvm

I am on my way home.

  • ⁧اَلان دارَم غَذا می‌خُورَم.⁩

alân dâram ġaḏâ mi-xoramalân dâram ghazâ mi-khoramalan darm ġḏa my-xrm

    I am eating right now.

  • ⁧اَلان دارَم دَرس می‌خوانَم.⁩

alân dâram dars mi-xânamalân dâram dars mi-khânamalan darm drs my-xanm

    I am studying right now.

02

What It Adds

Compare the two halves of this sentence:

  • ⁧اَلان دارَم غَذا می‌خُورَم، وَلی زیاد غَذا نِمی‌خُورَم.⁩

alân dâram ġaḏâ mi-xoram vali ziyâd ġaḏâ nemi-xoramalân dâram ghazâ mi-khoram vali ziyâd ghazâ nemi-khoramalan darm ġḏa my-xrm vly zyyad ġḏa nmy-xrm

I am eating right now, but I do not eat much.

The same verb appears twice. With (dâramdâramdarm) in front it is this moment; without it, it is a habit. That contrast is the whole point of the construction.

03

Other Things Can Come Between

The object, and anything else the sentence needs, sits between the two verbs.

  • ⁧او دارَد موهایَم را کوتاه می‌کُنَد.⁩

u dârad muhâyam râ kutâh mi-konadu dârad muhâyam râ kutâh mi-konadav dard mvhaym ra kvtah my-knd

    He is cutting my hair.

  • ⁧مَن دَر ماشینَم هَستَم، دارَم رانَندِگی می‌کُنَم.⁩

man dar mâšinam hastam dâram rânandegi mi-konamman dar mâshinam hastam dâram rânandegi mi-konammn dr mašynm hstm darm ranndgy my-knm

I am in my car, I am driving.

  • ⁧مَن کَم‌کَم دارَم نِگَران می‌شَوَم.⁩

    man kam-kam dâram negarân mi-šavamman kam-kam dâram negarân mi-shavammn km-km darm ngran my-švm

    I am gradually getting worried.

04

No Negative

This construction has no negative form. To say you are not doing something at the moment, drop (dâštandâshtandaštn) and negate the plain present.

  • ⁧زیاد غَذا نِمی‌خُورَم.⁩

    ziyâd ġaḏâ nemi-xoramziyâd ghazâ nemi-khoramzyyad ġḏa nmy-xrm

    I am not eating much.

05

Which of the Two to Use

(dar ḥâl-edar hâl-edr ḥal) is the written, formal option; this one belongs to speech. A learner will hear this far more often and should be able to recognise it instantly.
