Making Suggestions with '呢'

The particle (ne˙ㄋㄜnê) is a versatile sentence-final particle in Mandarin. It has a neutral tone and is used to ask reciprocal questions, inquire about location, or indicate that an action is currently in progress.

01

Asking Reciprocal Questions ("And you?")

The most frequent use of (ne˙ㄋㄜnê) is to bounce a question back to the other person or to apply a previous statement to a new subject. This is the equivalent of saying "And you?" or "What about...?" in English. This structure avoids the need to repeat the full question.

  • 我很好。你呢?

wǒ hěn hǎo. nǐ ne?ㄨㄛˇ ㄏㄣˇ ㄏㄠˇ. ㄋㄧˇ ˙ㄋㄜ?wo3 hên3 hao3. ni3 nê?

I am very good. And you?

  • 我是老师。他呢?

    wǒ shì lǎo·shī. tā ne?ㄨㄛˇ ㄕˋ ㄌㄠˇ·ㄕ. ㄊㄚ ˙ㄋㄜ?wo3 shih4 lao3·shih1. t'a1 nê?

I am a teacher. What about him?

This can also be used to offer alternatives or make suggestions based on context. For example, if one option is not available, you can suggest another using (ne˙ㄋㄜnê).

  • 没有面条。米饭呢?

    méi·yǒu miàn·tiáo. mǐ·fàn ne?ㄇㄟˊ·ㄧㄡˇ ㄇㄧㄢˋ·ㄊㄧㄠˊ. ㄇㄧˇ·ㄈㄢˋ ˙ㄋㄜ?mei2·yu3 mien4·t'iao2. mi3·fan4 nê?

There are no noodles. How about rice?

02

Asking "Where is...?"

When (ne˙ㄋㄜnê) is placed immediately after a noun or pronoun without any other context, it functions as a question asking for the location of that object or person. It is a shortened way of asking "Where is X?"

  • 我的书呢?

wǒ de shū ne?ㄨㄛˇ ˙ㄉㄜ ㄕㄨ ˙ㄋㄜ?wo3 tê shu1 nê?

    Where is my book?

  • 你的哥哥呢?

    nǐ de gē·ge ne?ㄋㄧˇ ˙ㄉㄜ ㄍㄜ·˙ㄍㄜ ˙ㄋㄜ?ni3 tê ko1·ko nê?

    Where is your older brother?

03

Indicating Ongoing Actions

(ne˙ㄋㄜnê) is often used at the end of a sentence to emphasize that an action is currently happening (progressive aspect). In this context, it is frequently paired with the word (zàiㄗㄞˋtsai4) or (zhèng·zàiㄓㄥˋ·ㄗㄞˋchêng4·tsai4), which appear before the verb. This structure corresponds to the English "-ing" form.

  • 他在睡觉呢。

    tā zài shuì·jiào ne.ㄊㄚ ㄗㄞˋ ㄕㄨㄟˋ·ㄐㄧㄠˋ ˙ㄋㄜ.t'a1 tsai4 shui4·chiao4 nê.

    He is sleeping.

  • 外面下雨呢。

    wài·miàn xià·yǔ ne.ㄨㄞˋ·ㄇㄧㄢˋ ㄒㄧㄚˋ·ㄩˇ ˙ㄋㄜ.wai4·mien4 shia4·yü3 nê.

    It is raining outside.

04

Adding Emphasis

In some contexts, (ne˙ㄋㄜnê) is used to exaggerate a fact or point out something that the listener might not have realized. It adds a tone of "actually" or "you know."

  • 还早呢!

    hái zǎo ne!ㄏㄞˊ ㄗㄠˇ ˙ㄋㄜ!hai2 tsao3 nê!

It is still early! (implying: don't worry, we have time)

  • 人很多呢。

rén hěn duō ne.ㄖㄣˊ ㄏㄣˇ ㄉㄨㄛ ˙ㄋㄜ.jên2 hên3 to1 nê.
