The (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) sentence structure is a unique feature of Chinese grammar used to emphasize what happens to a specific object. In a standard sentence, the object follows the verb (Subject + Verb + Object). In a (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) sentence, the object moves before the verb, directly after (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3).
This structure is often called the "disposal" construction because it describes how the subject handles, manipulates, or changes the object. It focuses on the result of an action.
01
Basic Structure
The basic formula changes the order from "Subject + Verb + Object" to:
Subject + 把 (bǎ) + Object + Verb + Other Elements
The "Other Elements" part is crucial. You cannot use (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) with a bare verb. The sentence must indicate what happened to the object (it was finished, broken, moved, eaten, etc.).
我把苹果吃了。
wǒ bǎ píng·guǒ chī le.ㄨㄛˇ ㄅㄚˇ ㄆㄧㄥˊ·ㄍㄨㄛˇ ㄔ ˙ㄌㄜ.wo3 pa3 p'ing2·ko3 ch'ih1 lê.
I ate the apple.
他把门关上了。
tā bǎ mén guān shàng le.ㄊㄚ ㄅㄚˇ ㄇㄣˊ ㄍㄨㄢ ㄕㄤˋ ˙ㄌㄜ.t'a1 pa3 mên2 kuan1 shang4 lê.
He closed the door.

When to Use '把'
You generally use this structure when you want to emphasize the result of an action on a specific object. It is particularly common in the following situations:
1. Changing the location of an object
When talking about moving something or putting something somewhere (using verbs like (fàngㄈㄤˋfang4) - to put or (dàiㄉㄞˋtai4) - to bring), the (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) structure is the most natural way to speak. In many cases, not using it sounds incorrect.
请把书放在桌子上。
qǐng bǎ shū fàng zài zhuō·zi shàng.ㄑㄧㄥˇ ㄅㄚˇ ㄕㄨ ㄈㄤˋ ㄗㄞˋ ㄓㄨㄛ·˙ㄗ ㄕㄤˋ.ch'ing3 pa3 shu1 fang4 tsai4 cho1·tsŭ shang4.

我把衣服放在椅子上了。

I put the clothes on the chair.
2. Changing the state of an object
If an action changes the object (e.g., cleaning it, finishing it, breaking it), use (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3).
我把房间打扫干净了。
wǒ bǎ fáng·jiān dǎ·sǎo gān·jìng le.ㄨㄛˇ ㄅㄚˇ ㄈㄤˊ·ㄐㄧㄢ ㄉㄚˇ·ㄙㄠˇ ㄍㄢ·ㄐㄧㄥˋ ˙ㄌㄜ.wo3 pa3 fang2·chien1 ta3·ssao3 kan1·ching4 lê.

Important Rules
To use (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) correctly, you must follow two main rules regarding the object and the verb.
1. The Object must be Specific
You can only use (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3) when the listener knows exactly which object you are talking about. It must be "the book" or "my homework," not just "a book."
我把作业做完了。
wǒ bǎ zuò·yè zuò wán le.ㄨㄛˇ ㄅㄚˇ ㄗㄨㄛˋ·ㄧㄝˋ ㄗㄨㄛˋ ㄨㄢˊ ˙ㄌㄜ.wo3 pa3 tso4·yeh4 tso4 wan2 lê.
I finished the homework.
(Here, it is understood to be your specific homework).
2. The Verb needs a Complement
As mentioned earlier, the verb cannot stand alone. It needs a particle like (le˙ㄌㄜlê), a result complement (like (wánㄨㄢˊwan2) - finished or (hǎoㄏㄠˇhao3) - good/done), or a direction.
你把药吃了吗?
nǐ bǎ yào chī le ma?ㄋㄧˇ ㄅㄚˇ ㄧㄠˋ ㄔ ˙ㄌㄜ ˙ㄇㄚ?ni3 pa3 yao4 ch'ih1 lê ma?
Did you take the medicine?

Negating '把' Sentences
If you want to say you did not do something to the object, place the negative word ( (méiㄇㄟˊmei2) or (bùㄅㄨˋpu4)) before (bǎㄅㄚˇpa3), never after it.
我没把书给他。
wǒ méi bǎ shū gěi tā.ㄨㄛˇ ㄇㄟˊ ㄅㄚˇ ㄕㄨ ㄍㄟˇ ㄊㄚ.wo3 mei2 pa3 shu1 kei3 t'a1.
I didn't give the book to him.
