Imperatives with '吧'

The particle (ba˙ㄅㄚpa) is a grammatical tool placed at the very end of a sentence to modify its tone. In Mandarin, using a verb by itself can often sound like a strict military order or a demand. Adding (ba˙ㄅㄚpa) softens the sentence, turning a command into a suggestion, a proposal, or a gentle urge.

01

Making Suggestions ("Let's...")

One of the most common uses of (ba˙ㄅㄚpa) is to propose an action to a group. When used this way, it functions exactly like the English "Let's". It indicates that the speaker wants the listeners to join them in doing something.

  • 我们走吧。

    wǒ·men zǒu ba.ㄨㄛˇ·˙ㄇㄣ ㄗㄡˇ ˙ㄅㄚ.wo3·mên tsou3 pa.

    Let's go.

  • 大家吃饭吧。

    dà·jiā chī·fàn ba.ㄉㄚˋ·ㄐㄧㄚ ㄔ·ㄈㄢˋ ˙ㄅㄚ.ta4·chia1 ch'ih1·fan4 pa.

    Let's eat, everyone.

  • 我们去看电影吧。

    wǒ·men qù kàn diàn·yǐng ba.ㄨㄛˇ·˙ㄇㄣ ㄑㄩˋ ㄎㄢˋ ㄉㄧㄢˋ·ㄧㄥˇ ˙ㄅㄚ.wo3·mên ch'ü4 k'an4 tien4·ying3 pa.

    Let's go watch a movie.

02

Softening Commands

When speaking directly to someone else (using "you"), (ba˙ㄅㄚpa) makes a request sound more polite and friendly. Instead of ordering someone to do something, you are suggesting that it would be a good idea for them to do it. This is often used when offering advice or urging someone to do something for their own benefit.

  • 你喝点水吧。

nǐ hē diǎn shuǐ ba.ㄋㄧˇ ㄏㄜ ㄉㄧㄢˇ ㄕㄨㄟˇ ˙ㄅㄚ.ni3 ho1 tien3 shui3 pa.

    Have some water. (Suggestion)

  • 你休息一下吧。

    nǐ xiū·xi yī·xià ba.ㄋㄧˇ ㄒㄧㄡ·˙ㄒㄧ ㄧ·ㄒㄧㄚˋ ˙ㄅㄚ.ni3 shiu1·shi yi1·shia4 pa.

    You should rest a bit.

  • 快点吧!

    kuài diǎn ba!ㄎㄨㄞˋ ㄉㄧㄢˇ ˙ㄅㄚ!k'wuai4 tien3 pa!

Hurry up! (Softer than just "Hurry!")

03

Accepting a Proposal ("Okay then")

(ba˙ㄅㄚpa) is also used to agree to a suggestion or request. In this context, it often carries a nuance of concession, meaning "Okay, fine," "All right then," or "Let's do it your way." It is slightly different from a very enthusiastic "Yes!", as it implies you are simply going along with the plan.

  • 好吧。

    hǎo ba.ㄏㄠˇ ˙ㄅㄚ.hao3 pa.

    Okay then / Fine.

  • 行吧。

    xíng ba.ㄒㄧㄥˊ ˙ㄅㄚ.shing2 pa.

    All right / That works.

  • 就这样吧。

    jiù zhè·yàng ba.ㄐㄧㄡˋ ㄓㄜˋ·ㄧㄤˋ ˙ㄅㄚ.chiu4 chê4·yang4 pa.

Let's leave it at that / That's it then.
