To express a desire to perform an action, such as "I want to eat" or "I want to go," you attach the suffix (taitaiたいタイ) to a verb. This transforms the verb into an expression of personal want.
01
Forming the たい-form
The (taitaiたいタイ) suffix attaches to the stem of a verb, which is the form you see before (masumasuますマス) in the polite form.
Ichidan verbs (る (ru)-verbs)
For these verbs, simply remove the final (ruruるル) and add (taitaiたいタイ).
- (mirumiruみるミル) → (mimiみミ) → (mitaimitaiみたいミタイ) - want to see
- (taberutaberuたべるタベル) → (tabetabeたべタベ) → (tabetaitabetaiたべたいタベタイ) - want to eat
- (neruneruねるネル) → (neneねネ) → (netainetaiねたいネタイ) - want to sleep
Godan verbs (う (u)-verbs)
For these verbs, change the final -u sound to its corresponding -i sound, then add (taitaiたいタイ).
- (ikuikuいくイク) → (ikiikiいきイキ) → (ikitaiikitaiいきたいイキタイ) - want to go
- (nomunomuのむノム) → (nominomiのみノミ) → (nomitainomitaiのみたいノミタイ) - want to drink
- (kaukauかうカウ) → (kaikaiかいカイ) → (kaitaikaitaiかいたいカイタイ) - want to buy
Irregular verbs
There are two main irregular verbs to remember.
- (surusuruするスル) → (shisiしシ) → (shitaisitaiしたいシタイ) - want to do
- (kurukuruくるクル) → (kikiきキ) → (kitaikitaiきたいキタイ) - want to come
02
Using たい (tai) in Sentences
When you use a (taitaiたいタイ)-form verb, the object of your desire can be marked with either the particle (ooをヲ) or (gagaがガ). While (ooをヲ) is very common, using (gagaがガ) places a stronger emphasis on the thing you want.

Expressing Someone Else's Desire
The (taitaiたいタイ) form is used to express your own desires (first person) or to ask someone about theirs directly (second person). To talk about what a third person wants to do, it is more natural to use the pattern (tagatteirutagatteiruたがっているタガッテイル). This form implies that you are observing signs of their desire.
It is formed by taking the verb stem and adding (tagatteirutagatteiruたがっているタガッテイル).
