In Indonesian, the concept of "to be" (am, is, are) functions quite differently than in English. Most of the time, no verb is used at all to link a subject to its description. However, the word exists to serve a specific linking function, primarily in formal contexts or definitions.
01
The "Zero" Copula
For the vast majority of simple sentences, specifically those describing adjectives (qualities) or locations, you do not use any word for "to be." The subject and the predicate simply follow one another. Using here would be grammatically incorrect or sound very unnatural.
Rumah ini besar.
This house is big.
Mereka di kantor.
They are at the office.
Saya senang.
I am happy.
02
Connecting Nouns (Equational Sentences)
is essentially an "equals sign" (=). It is used to equate two nouns or noun phrases. You use it when saying "Subject X is Noun Y."
While it can often be omitted in casual conversation, is standard in formal writing, speeches, or when defining terms.
Ayah saya adalah dokter.
My father is a doctor.
Jakarta adalah ibu kota Indonesia.
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia.
Ini adalah kesempatan bagus.
This is a good opportunity.
03
Emphasis and Long Sentences
Even in noun-to-noun sentences, is not always strictly mandatory in spoken language. However, it becomes necessary for clarity when the subject or the predicate is long and complex. It acts as a bridge that tells the listener, "The subject is finished; now here comes the definition."
Tujuan utama dari proyek ini adalah pendidikan anak-anak.
The main goal of this project is the education of children.
Kunci kesuksesan adalah kerja keras.
The key to success is hard work.
04
Distinction from 'Ada'
Learners often confuse with because of the spelling similarities. They have distinct meanings:
- : Links a subject to a definition (A = B).
- : Indicates existence ("there is/are"), presence ("to be present"), or possession ("to have").
Ada kucing di dapur.
There is a cat in the kitchen.
Kucing itu adalah hewan peliharaan saya.
That cat is my pet.
