The prefix is the primary marker for active voice verbs in formal and standard language. It indicates that the subject of the sentence is the one performing the action. While informal speech often drops this prefix, using it is essential for correct written grammar and polite conversation.
When attaches to a root word, it often changes the spelling of that word based on the first letter. These changes are consistent and follow specific phonetic rules.
01
The Variations of 'Me-'

02
The "Melting" Sounds (K, T, S, P)
A crucial rule for is that the letters k, t, s, and p usually "melt" or disappear when the prefix is added. They are replaced by the nasal sound of the prefix.
- K becomes ng: (send) → (NOT Mengkirim).
- T becomes n: (write) → (NOT Mentulis).
- S becomes ny: (sweep) → (NOT Menysapu).
- P becomes m: (wear/use) → (NOT Mempakai).
Saya menulis surat.
I write a letter.
Dia memakai sepatu hitam.
He wears black shoes.
Note: This rule generally applies to native root words. Foreign loanwords often retain the original letter (e.g., instead of ).
03

1. Creating Transitive Verbs
