Plural with लोग

The word (log) literally means people. In Hindi grammar, it functions as a plural marker specifically for human beings. While many pronouns and nouns have their own plural forms, adding (log) emphasizes the group identity or collective nature of the subjects. It is similar to saying "you guys," "you all," or "we people" in English.

01

Pluralizing Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns like (ham) - we, (tum) - you, and (āpap) - formal you can technically stand alone as plurals. However, native speakers very frequently add (log) to these pronouns to make the plurality explicit and to refer to a specific group of people present.

  • (ham) vs. (ham log): (ham) can sometimes be used for a singular "I" in certain dialects or formal contexts. Using (ham log) removes any ambiguity, meaning specifically "us" or "we people."
  • (tum) vs. (tum log): (tum) is used for one person or many. Adding (log) turns it into "you guys" or "you all."
  • (ve / yewe / ye) vs. (ve log / ye logwe log / ye log): This distinguishes "they" (general) from "those people" (specific group).
  • हम लोग भारतीय हैं।

ham log bhāratīya haĩ.ham log bharatiya haĩ.

    We are Indians.

  • आप लोग क्या खाएंगे?

āp log kyā khāeṃge?ap log kya khaeṃge?

    What will you (all) eat?

  • वे लोग क्रिकेट खेलते हैं।

ve log krikeṭ khelte haĩ.we log krikeṭ khelte haĩ.

    They (those people) play cricket.

02

Pluralizing Nouns and Adjectives

You can add (log) after a noun denoting a profession, relationship, or an adjective describing a type of person. This construction creates a plural noun phrase referring to that class of people.

When used with a noun, the noun usually remains in its base form, and (log) acts as the pluralizer.

  • अमीर लोग बड़े घरों में रहते हैं।

amīr log baḍe gharoṃ mẽ rahte haĩ.amir log baḍe gharoṃ mẽ rahte haĩ.

Rich people live in big houses.

  • बच्चे लोग खेल रहे हैं।

bacce log khel rahe haĩ.bachche log khel rahe haĩ.

    The children (kids) are playing.

  • डॉक्टर लोग अस्पताल में हैं।

ḍôkṭar log aspatāl mẽ haĩ.ḍôkṭar log aspatal mẽ haĩ.

The doctors are in the hospital.

03

Verb Agreement

Because (log) means people, it is grammatically treated as a masculine plural noun. Therefore, the verb and any associated adjectives in the sentence must always be conjugated in the masculine plural form, regardless of whether the group consists of men, women, or a mix.

  • ये लोग अच्छे हैं।

ye log acche haĩ.ye log achchhe haĩ.

    These people are good.

  • सब लोग जा रहे हैं।

sab log jā rahe haĩ.sab log ja rahe haĩ.

Everyone is going. (Literally: All people are going)

04

Restriction to Humans

It is important to remember that (log) is exclusively used for humans. You cannot use it to pluralize animals or inanimate objects.

  • Correct: (chātra logchhatra log) - students
  • Incorrect: (kutte log) - dogs - This is not valid Hindi.
