Nouns: Inessive Case (in)

Where English puts a preposition in front of a noun, Finnish puts an ending on it. There are six of these endings for place, in two sets of three. One set treats a location as an interior: in the house, into the house, out of the house. The other treats it as a surface: on the table, onto the table, off the table.

This is the first of the interior three — being inside something. The ending is -ssa if the word contains a, o or u, and -ssä if it does not; the two are one ending with two spellings, and the word decides which.

01

Being Inside a Place

  • Asun Helsingissä.

    I live in Helsinki.

  • Helsingi- the stem — note the k of Helsinki has softened to g
  • -ssä the "in" ending — -ssa on a word with a, o or u in it
  • no word for "in" appears anywhere; the ending is the whole preposition
  • Avaimet ovat laukussa.

The keys are in the bag.

  • Ruoka on jääkaapissa.

The food is in the fridge.

  • Olemme bussissa.

    We are on the bus.

02

Activities and Institutions

Finnish extends this "inside" idea to many activities and places where English uses "at" - at work, at school, in a meeting. Think of it as being immersed in the activity.

  • Olen töissä.

    I am at work.

  • Käyn koulussa.

    I attend school.

  • Hän on kokouksessa.

    He/she is in a meeting.

03

States and Conditions

The same ending describes the state something is in.

  • Auto on hyvässä kunnossa.

The car is in good condition.

  • Olen kiireessä.

    I'm in a hurry.

04

"Within" a Period of Time

The inessive expresses how soon something happens - the time within which it is done.

  • Tulen kymmenessä minuutissa.

    I'll come in ten minutes.

  • Juna lähtee tunnissa.

The train leaves in an hour.

05

The Internal Set at a Glance

It helps to see the three internal cases together, since they share the same "inside" idea pointed in different directions: (in the house), (into the house), (out of the house).
